solved External Insert Location?

Is the external insert an actual plugin? If so, where is it or is it hardwired into CbB?

I think it has to be implemented as part of the main application to get direct access to hardware audio ports.

Makes sense, also because it's UI image is in the TTSImage file and accessible by Theme Editor... but apparently no one really knows.

It's hardwired into the app, but "pretends" to be a plugin so it plays nicely with the fx rack.  Although in saying that, the hird-wiring is fairly de-coupled (so it works with all audio driver models) which makes maintenance on it difficult.
