Remote control map to controller button- turns "off" only, never "on"

Hi, I just hooked up a new SMC-Mixer to Cakewalk, using it as a Mackie controller surface. The knobs and sliders all work as expected, but the buttons, when assigned as remote controls, only ever turn things off, never back on. 

Anyone have any ideas? I've been searching for a while with no answers. Thanks.

OK, I fixed it by switching to\he mixer to DAW mode, and I was able to assign my own button functions by switching from SMC -master to SMC-private on the device list (2 different devices came up)
