Hi all.  I don't know if this is the right forum for this question so feel free to move it if necessary.

I'm wanting to get a pair of ear buds to use as a listening system for mix translation but I'm not sure what to buy.  I'm looking for something that will be in line with what the average listener uses.  I see most of the models are designed to use with a smart phone and I don't want/need that, ( I don't have one...).  I need to be able to plug them into the headphone out on my interface.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I just bought a pair of Beyerdynamic Soul Byrd earbuds.  If you like their headphones, you'll like these.  They're plugins rather than wireless (which was important to me).   I shopped around and was able to get them for $80.  There are quite a few reviews online:

My only concern here would be that most people don't listen on $80 earbuds!!!

I have nothing to base this on, but I'd tend to agree.  Thanks.

The generic smart phone ear buds would just need an adapter (3.5mm to 1/4") to use with an interface. Foam buds are roughly $5 and the adapter should be around $3.

Don't forget to take one earbud out and share the mix with a friend.

It drives me NUTS when I see people doing that!!!

(i just bought a pair of Sennheiser CX300S'.  i'm not sure how "average" they are, but they sound pretty good)

Thanks Francois.  Very helpful. This might well be exactly what I'm looking for.  I noticed that many of the cheaper models boast about being bass heavy and that's what I was trying to avoid.

Thanks again.

Cheers Paul.

We are so spoiled for choice, Sony, JBL, Sennheizer, TinAudio, BeyerDynamic, Audio Technica, Philips...all make affordable earbuds these days.

Its a shame you can just go into a shop and try all of them all out.

Guitar Center has a headphone test station that includes some ear buds.
