Paul G
Hi all. I don't know if this is the right forum for this question so feel free to move it if necessary. I'm wanting to get a pair of ear buds to use as a listening system for mix translation but I'm not sure what to buy. I'm looking for something that will be in line with what the average listener uses. I see most of the models are designed to use with a smart phone and I don't want/need that, ( I don't have one...). I need to be able to plug them into the headphone out on my interface. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Paul
jude77
I just bought a pair of Beyerdynamic Soul Byrd earbuds. If you like their headphones, you'll like these. They're plugins rather than wireless (which was important to me). I shopped around and was able to get them for $80. There are quite a few reviews online: https://www.soundguys.com/beyerdynamic-soul-byrd-review-21801/ https://www.whathifi.com/us/reviews/beyerdynamic-soul-byrd https://gadgets.ndtv.com/audio/reviews/beyerdynamic-soul-byrd-review-india-price-2048256
Sidney Earl Goodroe
My only concern here would be that most people don't listen on $80 earbuds!!!

I have nothing to base this on, but I'd tend to agree. Thanks.
mettelus
The generic smart phone ear buds would just need an adapter (3.5mm to 1/4") to use with an interface. Foam buds are roughly $5 and the adapter should be around $3.
Slugbaby
Don't forget to take one earbud out and share the mix with a friend. It drives me NUTS when I see people doing that!!! (i just bought a pair of Sennheiser CX300S'. i'm not sure how "average" they are, but they sound pretty good) Edited September 3, 2019 by Slugbaby

Francois van der Merwe
From a lot of reviews these Panasonic's are supposedly the best value for money. https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Headphones-RP-HJE120-K-Ergonomic-Comfort-Fit/dp/B003EM8008 https://www.cnet.com/reviews/panasonic-ergo-fit-review/

Very helpful. This might well be exactly what I'm looking for. I noticed that many of the cheaper models boast about being bass heavy and that's what I was trying to avoid. Thanks again. We are so spoiled for choice, Sony, JBL, Sennheizer, TinAudio, BeyerDynamic, Audio Technica, Philips...all make affordable earbuds these days. Its a shame you can just go into a shop and try all of them all out.

Guitar Center has a headphone test station that includes some ear buds.
