vocals distorting

I'm using a Warm Audio WA12 Mkll for a mic preamp, a Focusrite 18i20 interface, and a Stam Audio 87 condenser mic.  I have the mic preamp set to where the levels get barely past the green when singing louder.   And yet when I record, I get distortion at certain places.    I don't know why.  Suggestions are welcome.

Which input are you plugging into on the Focusrite?

What happens if you go straight into the Focusrite?

I plug into input 2.   It's the same if I go direct.

Turn down the input gain on your interface.

I’ve always found the Focusrite pre-amps to be more than just ok. Cut out the pre-amp and see if that gets you back to normal levels.
