Can AD2 be added to and manipulated to hit on the beat of the live recording?

Watch out for tempo-sync'd VSTs on projects with varying tempo.

Continuously changing tempos can cause clicking in many tempo sync'd VSTs.

Synths tend to do fine as long as there is no tempo sync FX in the chain.

To elaborate...this is mostly a problem with anything involving time (delays, reverb, etc.). This is why I usually record and mix to a click, then add subtle changes to the final, mixed track just prior to mastering.

I would just add that Melodyne is not always 100% accurate in its assessment of your tempo, so be prepared to do a little manual editing of the generated tempo map, and don't get discouraged.

It is easiest to set tempo maps so that MIDI is firing in sync with the grid (simpler and just visually easier to track). TAB-ing through transients, and using Set Measure/Beat at Now (Shift-M) is a manual process, but can be quicker/more accurate than their automated counterparts, especially on material without easily detected transients. This is also how you can touch up where Melodyne drops the ball.

Although you "can" fire off AD2 (MIDI) to some detection trigger, it can get convoluted and also prone to errors. Setting a tempo map (by beat if tempo roams a lot) makes things a lot simpler down the road.
