jm52
Imported a MIDI file, 8 channels.... I have changed the instruments for a couple of channels, and saved a preset. Yet, when i start the project, the instruments are reset to the midi file defaults. How do i stop this?
scook
When working with complete MIDI files do not use import and export, use open and save. Remember when saving MIDI files they will not save VST instrument selections and settings but will save MIDI settings made in the track inspector ("C" in the image below) and header. Saving as Cakewalk projects remember all project changes.
jm52
Thank you. But, i am working with a MID file of a popular tune. Dropped it on CW, it created the 8 tracks I changed the outputs to TTS. How do i stop the tracks resetting the instruments?

Dropped it on CW, it created the 8 tracks Dropping the file into an existing project is an import. This strips any tempo data from the file. This is probably not what you want to do. Dropping the file into CbB without an open project opens the MIDI file. As long as no MIDI output device is specified in preferences, TTS-1 will automatically be added with instruments assigned based on the MIDI file. This is probably how you should start. Once the project is opened either by dropping the file on an empty track view or using the menu File > Open, instruments may be changed using the drop downs shown in "C" in the image above. Use the second drop down selected the bank probably either "15488-Preset Normal 0" or "15360-Preset Rhythm". Then use the third drop down to select the instrument. Once all the assignments are made, save the file using File > Save to overwrite the existing MIDI file or File > Save As (or File > Save Copy As) to create a new MIDI file. This will have the new initial instrument settings saved in a MIDI file. If instruments are changing during playback, there are program changes in the file. These will need to be edited in the Event List View.
