new to Cakewalk - what are the best free metal guitar plugins that are MIDI-compatible?

Recommended Posts

Hello.  I am newbie to Cakewalk and need direction on the best free VST's/plugins that emulate the rhythm and lead guitar sounds/tones of metal players.  Though I have guitar playing experience, I am not talking about a setup where I plug my guitar into equipment and then to my PC.  What I am looking for is a free plugin where I can dial up a guitar sound after writing a MIDI musical sequence in piano roll view.  Say for example I made a song idea and wanted to hear how it would sound with Warren DeMartini of Ratt's rhythm sound.  The electric guitar sound that came with Cakewalk sounded more like 1980's 8-bit video game music (LOL).  Thanks!

I guess you are referring the guitar in the TTS-1.

Yea, it is what one would expect from a General MIDI sound bank.

Keep in mind any sound may be processed through an amp sim like the bundled TH3 Cakewalk and other effects.

TH-3 Cakewalk probably has plenty of guitar amp sim, cabinets, and processing to get you started. Just start with a decent clean guitar virtual instrument sound and run it though the effect.

Also, IK Multimedia offers AmpliTube Custom Shop for free. https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/amplitubecs/index.php?p=info

You get 24 free pieces of gear to start, including 9 stomps, 4 amps, 5 cabs, 3 mics, 2 rack effects. And then you can add on more by purchasing additional pieces.

^^^Well, that's rather cynical...even if mostly true.

There are, however, many products that do a decent enough job. Unfortunately, they also cost a fair bit of money, starting at around $150. TH3 is a pretty good mid-priced example.

Of course, there are freebies. Lots of them. They don't cost anything, so poke around the internet and give 'em a try. Here are a few lists to get you started. Granted, each is just one person's opinions, but it's a jumping-off point to your adventure.
