kitekrazy1
I have an older WD Blue drive failing. It's a storage drive but writing to it is slow or creates an I/O error. Windows will do a chkdisk at startup or sometimes it doesn't even show up. If I run tests in WD or Seagate's app it passes all SMART tests. Starise
Might be as simple as a loose connection in the interface cord or female connectors????? If it were me I would be shopping a new HDD for transfer. I don't like finicky drives.
craigb
Try the D.U.M.B.A.S.S. utility next (Discard Unusable Medium and Buy Another Storage Solution). ?
slartabartfast
It certainly sounds like The Force is weak within it, and anything of value should be backed up elsewhere. SMART is not that sensitive to impending drive failure that is it has a high false negative rate. If you get a SMART warning you should take it seriously, but not getting one is no guarantee of trouble free operation. The fact that the drive does not show up at all on boot sometimes (but not always) suggests there may be a connection problem, and it would be worth trying the drive connected to known good power and data interfaces in the same or another computer to see if the behavior continues there.
