  1. Yeah, fresh install of everything is the way to go. It would help to know which versions of SONAR you have and need to install. At least one full SONAR install is a good idea before adding CbB.

Depending on how presets were stored can affect a new build. If the Cakewalk preset manager was used (the one in the upper left above every plug-in UI), the plug-in manager can export the presets from the registry. If plug-in specific preset managers were used, migration depends on the how presets are stored.

Third party plug-in activation is another manufacturer specific routine. As mentioned above, Celemony and XLN Audio have their own installers and activation methods. Use their installers to install their products. Both allow 2 concurrent installs so it is possible to have them both activated on the old and new PC although you will want to deactivate the software before retiring the old machine.

  2. No

The Overloud plug-ins were locked to SONAR and now CbB. To run the bundled Overlound plug-ins (BREVERB 2 Cakewalk, TH3 Cakewalk)  in SONAR requires a version of SONAR that included the plug-in. Unfortunately SONAR 8.5 did not include the plug-in so the plug-in will be locked out when opening projects containing the plug-in. Other than the PC modules which won't work in SONAR 8.5, all of the others are included in 8.5 (with the exception of 8.5 LE).

Still can't get drum map to show except right-clicking on keyboard (which it defaults to automatically) and select rename notes (AD Drums). So that works. But select the same midi clip again and it has defaulted back to keyboard view (that's as in piano roll view). I have tried creating an AD .ins file and importing it into instrument definitions but that doesn't seem to help either.

Assigning note names in the Notes Pane is not the same as using a drum map and the Drum Grid Pane

This covers the basics of using drum maps with AD2.

And am I right that AD only allows either master out for individual instruments in the kit or master and and individual out.....or individual out? There seems no way to group, e.g. toms 1, 2, 3, 4, each has its separate output.

It is possible to use the master and individual outs at the same time. Refer to page 33 in the Addictive Drums 2 Manual.pdf or look at the template supplied in the zip file linked in the OP and the Knowledge Base article link in this reply. When using separate outs for the toms use a bus or aux track to sum them. Use quick groups and create control groups if desired.

  4. When running a DAW it is a good idea to disable Windows sounds completely.

If you are running ASIO4All, this is not a real ASIO driver. It is a wrapper for WDM drivers primarily designed for programs that only support ASIO drivers. Sometimes it works better than the native Windows drivers; other times ASIO4All is a problem and must be uninstalled to restore the machine back to proper operation.

AFAIK, the native Realtek ASIO does not work very well either.

MME is the driver mode of last resort. Typically the worst performer.

  5. It depends on the plug-in and how it was added to the machine. Adding the plug-ins to the exclude list in the plug-in manager is the safest approach. It will not recover disk space but it the easiest to restore if something is accidentally removed from the plug-in list. The second safest approach is moving the dlls out of the scan path. Again, easier to recover from than deleting items from the disk.

When it comes to deleting from disk, usually the best approach for software that uses installers is the uninstall process in Windows Control Panel. For software without installers, delete is fine.

  6. The plug-in does not have to scan or be setup as FX in CbB.

Some developers provide FX versions of the plug-ins, some do not and their synth versions process audio in CbB.

I mentioned several synths in my previous post which do not scan as FX and are not setup as FX but still process audio when placed in instrument/audio PC, clip, or track FX racks. Granted Pentagon has a switch in the plug-in UI that must be enabled and the Arturia synths need the audio inputs in the UI wired up appropriately.

Another plug-in recognized as a synth in CbB that process audio (in fact that is its only purpose)  is XILS Labs XILS 5000 Vocoder. Again there is no FX version of the plug-in, it scans as a synth yet processes audio when added to any instrument/audio track PC, clip or track FX rack.

  7. As I noted in my original response, some of the FX Chains do reference plug-ins not bundled with CbB. I found Metallic Hydrogen in the Modern folder. The chain has 3 plug-ins in it:

    • Z3ta+  fx2
    • Sonitus Compressor
    • Para-Q

Of these three, only the Sonitus Compressor is bundled with CbB. The other two plug-ins were bundled with several Cakewalk DAWs but have yet to be ported by BandLab.

  8. The PC and FX Rack are processed in series. By default the PC is before the track FX Rack. It may be placed after the track FX rack using the "Post FX Rack" option in the PC context menu or the Post button above the mini-Quad Curve EQ in the track inspector and console view.

Scan on Startup which is the recommended and default setting.

Starting with X3, "Automatic Background Scan" is the default (and recommended) setting. Regardless of the scan option the scanner only scans plug-ins once unless the "rescan" options are enabled. This is why the "rescan" options are disabled by default and should only be used to solve certain issues when running a manual scan.

  10. The Teleport Server is BitBridge used to load 32bit plug-ins.

If the scanner is is already running it is either waiting for input or hung for some other reason.

Open preferences and verify the scanner is set to manual scan in scan options

    Shut down CbB

    Reboot

    Run CbB

    Open VST Settings in preferences

Make sure "Scan in Sandbox" and "Generate Scan Log" are enabled

    Run a scan from preferences

The log may help you with where the scanner gets hung.

It is best to avoid 32bit plug-ins. They can be a problem. 32bit plug-ins are either old and not maintained or the result of using an old development platform. Either way, rarely worth the effort and performance penalty.

If the "rescan" options are enabled on the VST Settings page, make sure to turn them off after running a complete scan. Leaving these option on makes the scanner work more than necessary and can leave to scan failures.

  11. Not sure what this means

Wow, I have JUST do that a few weeks ago. Like totally moved every file from my C drive to an external drive.

but running projects on an external drive is not a good idea.

Do you mean updating windows or Sonarx3?

My post had a link to the upgrade instructions for Cakewalk by BandLab but since you asked.... Keeping the OS and the DAW current are both good ideas. Especially if you are having trouble with your current setup.
