This video, made by a musician with time on his hands, and showing testing he did to compare a bunch of mics, was posted on the Production Expert blog. I'm sure a lot of you have seen it. But I decided to post it here because it's shows so clearly what the overall frequency response differences are and, if you want the graphs, he suggests that you can pause the video on the graphs you want and take a screenshot. There's probably plenty of other differences, which may or may not be important, that he doesn't discuss; but I think his work provides really useful information for selecting mics to buy and use.

Any advantage going from w10x64 Pro to 11 same?

Any advantage going from w10x64 Pro to 11 same?
Bill Phillips replied to Pathfinder's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I have a 13900K and I'm using This air cooler called the best by Tom's Hardware in its review. It is big, has 2 towers, 2, 120 mm fans, and room for a third. I'm using the Phantom Spirit SE which has one more tube and is a little shorter than the one reviewed. If I need the third fan I'll use a 90 mm one because a 120 mm fan would be sitting on the RAM and stick ou above the top of the cooler. I like a lot of fans too. I have 6 bequiet 140 mm PWM Wings Pro 4 case fans. I can't hear a thing with the case cover off and my head in the opening. I'm still installing software and haven't loaded it up at all, but, I think, Tom's Hardware tested it up o 200 Watts. -

I agree. No improvements, though I have not been able to use CbB very much so far, mostly just testing, as I'm still adding programs to my new DAW. I haven't seen any problems that going back to Windows 10 would solve. For me, Windows 11 Pro is just as intuitive as Windows 10 Pro if not better. There may be some downsides to some of the security improvements in 11, but I haven't noticed them. I also seem to reading a recommendation, I think in Tom's Hardware that Windows 11 Pro is a better choice because, I think, it's more configurable, though most of the extra stuff only comes into play if your PC will be part of a managed domain. -
Ok. I get the point. Question withdrawn.

I'm lost at "1. Open the Steam client." I'm not familiar with Steam. Is it the StEAM online gaming platform or something else?- 13 replies

Is 27.12.00 the last version of the Reference Guide?

Thanks. I like long stories. They tend to put things in perspective. My wife's hearing aids were expensive. She bought them from her audiologist. But on the rare occasions we go out to listen to live music she ends up taking them out because of the strange loud sounds they make. I've used single speaker Shure in ear bluetooth monitors for years for casual listening and ambient noise cancellation; but they can vary from too bassie to no bass at all depending on placement in my ear canal. So I don't use them for mixing, and there's also that bluetooth latency. I've also thought about apply EQ to the master channel after all other effects including analyzers aimed at canceling my hearing loss to see what that does. I have lots of bass trapping my small room and the sound, when I've tested it, is pretty good at the listening position. I have a big high Q cut at 6k (about 30 dB). I've got a feeling if I mirror that with a boost it isn't going to sound very realistic even to me. And it might be down right annoying to my wife in the living room watching TV:)
-
Thanks. That matches what I was expecting from hearing aids. Looking at curves from my hearing test which are steadily getting worse, you'd think I can't hear at all. Bit that's not my experience when I'm listening to music in my monitors or headphones. I can usually hear EQ changes; and, I too, have a frequency spectrum display up any time I'm analyzing and adjusting EQ or levels.
-
My wife and ENT tell me I need hearing aids (down more than 30db with a significant L/R difference, and huge 40db dips at 3-6k recovering at 8k. So not flat at all. I no that hearing aids are "tuned" for speech and to enhance the listening experience. So, I'm thinking they wouldn't be very useful in trying to determine how the music you're mixing sounds to everyone else. Hopefully some of you have tried it and can provide some guidance. Thanks. BTW, I searched the forum for "hearing aid" and only found a couple of instances where the phrase was used as a pejorative. No I'm guessing mixing while wearing hearing aids is a bad idea.

Has anyone evaluated or used PluginsMonitorFree? I just received an email add for this product but haven't downloaded it. I've always thought that Cakewalk does a pretty good job of scanning plugins and reporting runtime problems. So I'm not sure adding an active scanner would be worth whatever performance and reliability impacts it might have.

I can't help you but I'm interested in the answer. IIRC, RX uses the audio interface. So I'd assumed that I needed to close CbB before opening RX.

I have a related question and hope it's ok to ask it here. Is there a 64-bit version? The one I have 32-bit? Also, I just finished installing plugins from 8-Platinum in order. I assumed that plugins would be upgraded to the latest version. i.e newer versions would replace older versions. Is that not true?

Recording mode preferences - Prefer 'Overwrite', not 'Comping'
Bill Phillips replied to Sven's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I'm confused. Do Cakewalk updates use the default Template paths assigned by Cakewalk or the paths in File Location Preferences? When I create templates, I use names not being used by used for the "stock" templates and I think mine are left alone by updates. And when I change paths, I move the stock content to the new location. Do Cakewalk updates reconstruct the content at the location assigned when Cakewalk was initially installed? -
For me Regedit was not required because I used a Restore Point to uninstall Cakewalk software which allowed me to time travel back to when Cakewalk software had been installed. ☺️

Thanks. You're right. I'm thinking it might be handy when opening old projects, but it has been a lot of trouble so far. I'm thinking most of the 64-bit plugins from SONAR 8 on should run, though I've had issues with some of them. However, earlier, mostly 32-bit, versions are probably useless and I'm not bothering with those. Also, I'm nostalgic and like to look back at the way it was, when we were younger. Hey, that might be a good hook?

Thanks. But if you have 8.5 you must also have 8 since 8.5 is an update for 8. Hopefully, there's an advanced minimal install for 8. I did a full install yesterday. Good idea on copying DVDs to SSD drives. It's nice to know the installers will run from a SSD. I had trouble getting some of the DVDs to load for 8, but in the end they all did and I had no other problems. Historically I've altered install paths in the past but this time I'm sticking with the defaults.

I hope I can remember to not install Dimensiion Pro until I get to Platinum where I can use Command Center.
-
Well, I'd installed 1.2 first which required me to use the 1.5 update, but the update wouldn't install because it couldn't find the 1.2 version. I then uninstalled the 1.2 version and tried to run the complete install version of 1.5, but it balked and said it found an older version. That's when I gave up used a restore point to eliminate all the Cakewalk installs. Hopefully this time I'll not install the 1.2 version and be able to install the full 1.5 version using Command Center as @scook suggested.

Thanks. I'm really trying, but so far not, succeeding in making a clean install. I'll use the clean install instructions. I think I have them saved in OneNote as well. Other than my Scarlett 18i8, Cakewalk is the first DAW software I'm installing. So I don't need to worry about other plugins. I'm interested in the stereo version that came with 8. It disappeared after 8.5 according to the spreadsheet. I should be able to install it in 8 & 8.5 to get the update if there was one. I didn't remember to choose the minimal installations when installing yesterday. Hopefully, I'll remember that tomorrow. I think there are a couple of plugins from X1 that I'd like to install. I am using the spreadsheet. I have that in OneNote as well. I've now got a copy that is highlighted to show when the plugins I'm interested in were last available so that I'll get the latest version. I will do full Platnium install followed by CbB. This PC is Windows 11 Pro. So, I'm hoping that won't cause any problems. IIRC, all the anecdotal accounts I've noticed on the forum have indicated that no one is having problems with Windows 11. Thanks again.

I'm starting over again installing legacy SONAR versions to gain access to legacy 64-bit plugins and I have a few questions. I've read, TMK, all the forum post on this subject and have a half-dozen browser tabs open to them for reference, and I still found a way to screw the install up. After working on it for several days and spending hours of trying to get the Dimension Pro 1.5 update to install with X1, I regressed to a restore point just after I installed my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 and before I'd installed any Cakewalk software. The programs are gone from the Programs and Features list, but all the folders and supporting files up through X1 are still there. Should I delete all of the Cakewalk folders and files? I started with SONAR 8 DVDs because I wanted to have the Lexicon Pantheon reverb that wasn't available after 8.5 and I needed 8 to install8.5. I used advanced install but installed all 64-bit plugins. Was that a mistake? Should I have installed no plugins with 8 and just the Pantheon Reverb with 8.5? Would that have allowed me to install the full version of Dimension Pro with X1, or could I have waited to install Dimension Pro with Platinum? My new PC is Windows 11. From reading Forum posts, my understanding is that these programs will all run on Windows 11, though I don't intend to run any other than CbB. I just want the plugins. Sorry, and Thank you.

Can't extract 02_SONAR_X1_Producer.part2.rar [SOLVED]
Bill Phillips replied to Bill Phillips's question in Q&A
Thanks for the clarification. IIRC, It's been more than a decade since I last installed any of these older version. I don't think 01_READ_FIRST does contain install instructions. I read through them several times and didn't see that. I hadn't downloaded Parts 3&4. Starting with SONAR 8, I've been using advanced install, but I've been installing all 64-bit plugins with the idea that they will get updated as I go. Also, I'm having so much fun doing this that I don't want to do it again. Thank again. -
I need some help in installing SONAR X1. I have three SONAR X1 initial install files shown here inside the squiggly blue line. I installed .part1 but .part2 is a rar file. I tried unzipping it using 7zip, WinZip and RAR Opener. All had errors in extracting Setup-6.bin, and there doesn't appear to be .exe file to launch. This may have been installed by .part1 but I can't tell since I don't know what's in it. It doesn't appear to be addressed in the ReadMe doc. The Additional_Content installer does launch, but I closed it because the installer states that Dimension Pro 1.5 needs to be installed first. I have that as a separate installer.

SONAR 8.5 ESD_Setup "Cannot locate the required version of the program"
Bill Phillips replied to Bill Phillips's question in Q&A
So that's it. Thanks. I have the SONAR 8, 4 DVD box set. So I can install that. All I want are 64 bit plugins that aren't available on later versions. It looks like the only one that was dropped after 8.5 is the Lexicon Pantheon Reverb. Looks like I can get it on 8.0 and don't need to install 8.5. Hopefully it has an advanced install option. -
SONAR 8.5 ESD_Setup "Cannot locate the required version of the program"
Bill Phillips posted a question in Q&A
I've just built a new PC and want to install legacy plugins, starting with 8.5, before installing CbB. I believe I have all the correct files. Here's a link to screenshots of the install file folder and the error message. I believe the problem is that the installer is looking for the previous (8.3.1, I think) of SONAR which I don't want to install. I tried running the installer as Administrator and that didn't help. I've also used the "can't locate the required version" in both Cakewalk Forum and Google searches with no luck. So maybe this is new. My new PC is Windows 11, don't have it listed in my signature yet. I did find this form post from 2009 indicating I do need at least 8.0 installed to use the downloaded installer. Of course, the 8.0 installer may require that an earlier version is installed.
