Nah! It would go straight over their collective heads. Don't you reckon?

Oh yea! Forgot to mention OFC and directional. SOOOOOO important. The 25 micron gold plating is also ULTRA critical. Thanks for the reminder, Craig, now how did I forget that? Except ... that's a -10dBV lead and unbalanced too. Naughty, naughty.

Hmmm! Crikey, I'm digging back a long way and I'm not really a studio techy, more some PA stuff a while back (and aircraft electronics which was my initial work background). I remember building a low impedance pre-amp for a moving coil cartridge, but that was back in the 70s. The cartridge was about 10 Ohms and ultra low output, just a few micro volts as I recall. So that should give me a clue. No ... I'll look it up in my reference docs, if I can find them, and get back to you. (Being of a certain age, you might have to remind me!!!) You don't want to know about motor driven ailerons on the Concorde by any chance do you? The current required to overcome air pressure at supersonic speeds. No, I thought not. Obsolete, redundant. Time for a cuppa. Toodle-pip. JohnG. P.S. All electrical transducers show a varying impedance with reference to frequency. Take a look at the impedance curve of any non-amplified loudspeaker. Impedance can dive below 2 Ohms and go way above 40 Ohms for a 'nominal' 8 Ohm impedance. I would say that, what, 300 Ohms to 2 k Ohms is not an unnatural impedance for such a transducer.

Yay! ? Stupid boy!

John, Look 'dude', I'm 72, sex is a thing that occurs once a month (if I'm lucky). ? Have you heard about old cars that had to be 'hand cranked' to get them started? Yep, you got the idea. ? Even if I'm in the mood the lady in my life HAS to be in agreement otherwise it's all thought and no action! ? Now if she gets an idea ... ? Nah! Let's leave it there, shall we? ? JohnG. P.S. The bit about "my funeral" was definitely below the belt!

Okay, sorry, I've been cooking lunch. No Becan, but a roast garlic chicken with roast potatoes, Kenya green beans, some leeks, gravy and a little bread sauce. A glass of chilled wine to wash it down. Burp! Pardon me. So, and I'm really going back a long time here, I did my electronics training, would you believe, back in '64 to '66! Yup, I'm an oldie, 70+. I've used StudioSpares before, but a long time ago, they were good back then, but that's maybe 15 years ago. Basically, according to those specifications, any standard decent balanced cable should do. More specifically ... The output of the OCTA-Capture is TRS according to the pictures and the spec you quoted. Input of the Tannoys, again balanced, a combined jack means it usually has a TRS socket contained within an XLR socket. So an XLR with a large hole in the middle. Both output and input measured at 0dBu. dBu is a professional way of measuring signal level into an electrical load of 600 Ohms impedance. The important thing is that they match. It's normal to have a lower impedance output (in this case 1.8 k Ohms) driving a higher impedance input (32 k Ohms). So that's all good. So you can go TRS to XLR lead or TRS to TRS lead. Check that I'm correct about the combined XLR/TRS combined socket on the Tannoys. Radiospares call their TRS to TRS "Stereo leads", "cables" are without terminating plugs. My own choice would probably be one of their "Pro" range e.g. https://www.studiospares.com/Cables-Leads/Leads-Jack/Pro-Neutrik-Balanced--Stereo-Jack-Lead-5m-Black_579320.htm That's five metres I think, but double check the sockets first, okay? A cable like that should last a lifetime depending how much traffic/footfall it gets across it. JohnG. P.S. Check Radiospares Ts & Cs to see whether if you get a dry joint they'll quickly replace the lead. (it happens, rarely, even with the very best soldered connectors.)

No, 600 Ohms is the characteristic impedance of the load that a pro audio cable, e.g. XLR to XLR or TRS, is working into. The cable itself is a very much lower resistance than 600 Ohms. Resistance and capaitance change as the length of the cable increases, and hence impedance. Take a look at Thomann in Germany under the tag PA. They have their own sssnake cables and snake pro. They advertise in English too. When I lived there I bought a few snake pro cables, as far as I recall they used Neutrik connectors, unsure now. But with all/most of the cables they sell you'll find there are two grades. The more expensive ones, of the ones I bought, were definitely better quality. I did try a few brands and all of the slightly more costly versions were well made. Never spent a fortune. The cable itself felt better made, the connectors were quality not flimsy. Gold plating of the plugs is too soft if you're connecting disconnecting often and only any good if the socket is gold plated too. Quality nickel is the thing, hard as hell.

Yea, actually I do, but I pay about as much attention to all this crud as I do to the current "let's have a go at" insert any celebrity name. E.g. Jackson, Cliff Richard, that film producer whose name I've forgotten, etc. Frankly, it bores the pants off me. Now where did they go?

Serious vulnerability in Windows 7 / Google Chrome
JohnG replied to msmcleod's topic in The Coffee House
Of course they aren't going to say that others don't upgrade, it's the unspoken implication "hey, you're good with US!" I've heard that when you clear ALL cookies in Chrome it leaves the Google ones in place. In Firefox, it clears them all, I double checked. -
The simple key to understanding this is that low impedance to low impedance there is a significant current flow, this can lead to distortion. (N.B. simple) Low to hi means that it's predominantly a voltage flow. Pre-amps are primarily built to allow sufficient headroom over the normal voltage generated. It doesn't matter how loud the sound is it's about the underlying electronics design. Ribbons are low impedance like pickup coils so it's not unusual to have a guitar pre-amp impedance up at 1 MegOhm. Any help?

Serious vulnerability in Windows 7 / Google Chrome
JohnG replied to msmcleod's topic in The Coffee House
Yep, probably all true, but it kind of implies that other companies, e.g. Mozilla, don't upgrade to protect against vulnerabilities. I don't know whether they do or not, but I keep Firefox upgraded and I'm still on Win7pro. Some of the hardware I use isn't compatible with Win10 and I haven't the money to spend on new stuff (pensioner). -

Corrected. Firefox plus uBlock (the origin version) is are the one two at the moment. Corrected. -
TL/DW. Who's Bill Cosby? Oh, yea! Some ex Merican footballer or summat, in'e? You'll have to get up early, Grem, to get one up. I'm an insomniac, 3:00 to 3:30 a.m. is my first cuppa T (plus a becan sarnie)!

Why would I want to bare my cross when I can bear it? Bare = make naked. Bear = e.g. carry. An even more pedantic pedant.

The quality of cables is, at least to me, about quality of materials and connectors. e.g. copper quality and thickness plus number of strands in each conductor, if shielded the density of the shield, braided or wound, the construction of the plug and thickness of the nickel plating on the mating parts. (Sorry) Also impedance and capacitance of the cable make a slight difference. So the type of insulation used can make a small difference. Then there's their application whether they're intended for +4dBu or -10dBV use (pro 600 ohm impedance or domestic use), balanced or unbalanced. The latter is decided by the electronics both at the driving and receiving ends of the signal. The cable should match the electronics. Yes, Neutrik make excellent plugs and sockets in my experience. Many cable suppliers use Neutrik connectors in their offerings.
-
All incorrect I'm afraid. We're talking about fathers, pedants and horses in the plural so ... Fathers' Day, Pedants' Day and Horses' Day. That is Fathers (plural) apostrophised and Pedants (plural) apostrophised. (Or apostrophized in American English.) Please, if you're going to be a pedant, do it correctly! Grrr! A pedant's pedant.

Serious vulnerability in Windows 7 / Google Chrome
JohnG replied to msmcleod's topic in The Coffee House
Chrome on my W7 PC? Not blooming likely. Nothing Google is coming remotly near my laptop. Well, it did for a short period, but I hated it and CCleanered it away, plus all the crap it left behind. Thank heavens too for uBlock Origin. -
Sincere condolences from Tigger too, he says that he would have loved her too. However ... I'm not sure whether his use of the word "love" exactly coincides with the meaning we attach to it in the context of this thread. He still thinks he's got what it takes, but in my opinion it's all talk nowadays. ? Sorry, that should have read "... meows these days."
-
Yup, Tiggy Winkles, who also has many other names (as any feline worthy of the title should, see the Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats) was also from a home. He picked me out from the crowd and asked whether there was a chance he could accompany on my homeward journey. I ask you, who could refuse such a request from such a handsome young chap? No-one in their right mind. "Thank you" he said "nice pad you have here. Mind if I stretch out?"
-
Yep, and articles in the Lenovo and Thinkpad forums that show you how to, step by step.
-
Allow me to introduce you to Tigger the young blade: And Tiggy Winkles as he is now. Would you believe he's now twenty, yes 20, years old? Dearly loved.

Seriously, check out the Thinkpad range. I'm glad I did. I picked up a used T430, i7 a coupla weeks back for £245. (A condition, almost looked like new.) Spent a bit over a hundred on RAM, mSATA SSD, Samsung 1600x900 LCD screen replacement, backlit keyboard, 1TB 7200rpm HDD, USB 3.0 docking bay. All used. Plus one brand new genuine 9 cell battery. It flies. Oh! Did I mention a set of wings?
-
Not a bad choice. Just upgraded my wife's T410 from 3GB to 8. Took 5 minutes. Didn't even have to unplug the keyboard. Turned it 90 degrees took out the old 2GB module and snapped in the new 4GB. Flipped the laptop, took out the 1GB SODIMM and snapped in the new 4GB. Switch on and ... BANG! No, it just worked.
-
Wait a goldarn minute ... musicians DIE? When did that start to happen? There was me thinking about eternal life ... . Shriek.

The keyboard of most Lenovo laptops can be easily replaced. (Just completed a T430, i7, 16GB, 256GB mSATA, 1TB fast HDD complete rebuild. New screen too.) There are usually one or two set screws that hold it in place located in the little hatch on the underside. A good, used keyboard can bought from a quality supplier on eBay for a few pounds. Undo the set screw(s), turn the right way up, slide the keyboard back to release the little lugs that hold it in place, then lift it a little to reveal the plug and cable. Gently pull out the plug, and set the old keyboard aside. Move the replacement to the correct position and plug the cable in, then locate the back of the keyboard under the bracket and press the front into place. Turn the laptop over and replace the set screw(s). Replace the little cover. Job done!
