  1. I haven't looked at these in a while, but I thought that the antecedents of Surge XT were 100% free (no fees charged) for the past several years while Vital is only free (no fees charged) for a limited version intended to "inspire" users to subscribe to a monthly fee. I haven't researched this; would appreciate feedback purely on this issue irrespective of which one people prefer. Thanks.
  2. On my PC, Right click > Edit for the the Samplitude *.kbn assignments has section headers ([Track View], [Piano Roll View], [Loop Construction View], [Track View], etc.), Kx assignments, etc. Not sure why I can read them and you can't. They also open with Wordpad and my Web Brower. I just downloaded VS Code and dragged in a *.kbn file. After I said to trust it, it opened. Maybe others can help.
  3. I am not sure what you want to do, why, or if using the contents of the KBN files will help you do what you want. I am not sure that the assignments are kept in Windows' Registry. I am not a computer guru and almost never edit values there. I am just sharing my experiences with reading *.kbn files since you had problems doing that. On my PC Notepad opens the *.kbn files with right click > edit. If I wanted to put those into a spreadsheet I would just copy and paste them (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V). When I looked at them in HxD (using Windows' "Open with" function), I don't see anything other than the text and the ascii representation of the text. "SONAR Default Keyboard Assignments.kbn" only has 4 lines, just like your image shows. Please don't use any of the information I have written here to explore making random changes to the Windows Registry.
  4. What steps did you take? I just took a 726,630 KB flac file (outdoors open mic recording (birds, dogs, kids, planes, cars, etc.) approx. 2 1/2 hours), dragged it from a file finding utility called "Everything" into a new instance of my personal blank template (into the track header area).. Due to the size of the file, it took a little while for Cakewalk to convert it, but after a couple of minutes I had the file in Cakewalk as an audio track. I am sure there are other methods that would work, too. EDIT: I am also using CbB 2022.02 build 36, Win 10 Pro 21H2. My PC is a minimal system--2011 era PC, duo core Intel chip, 8 GB RAM system. UPDATE: I just tried (a) dragging a flac file from Cakewalk's Media Browser and (b) double clicking the file in the Media Browser. Both methods worked.
  5. Once in a while when I boot Cakewalk I forget I had other music software running (MIDI-OX, a standalone product, etc.) that uses a MIDI device (usb keyboard, etc.) I use automatically with Cakewalk. As almost everyone who has done this knows, this causes the poorly worded and misleading Microsoft generated "Not enough memory available" message. It is easy enough (1a) to closed down the other program(s) or (1b) to change the MIDI devices used in the other program(s), etc. and then (2a) to shut-down/reboot Cakewalk or (2b) to go into [P]references to re-enable the MIDI device(s), etc. However, it would be handy (that is, less intrusive to workflows) to have a "Retry" button after doing (1a) or (1b) so users don't have to do (2a) or (2b). Not a bug, not critical, but I suspect some users might be less frustrated by the misleading "not enough memory" message--especially if there were also a message (or an info button) that said something like "Check to see if other software is using the failed MIDI Device. If so, [steps to take]").
  6. Just an FYI given the interest in the expanded Synth Rack:
  7. YUP!!!! Long time user (since MS-DOS, but I had limited use of TTS/SONAR/Cakewalk during the years I was sequencing mainly via hardware sequencers built into ROMplers/Samplers/etc.). I learned about the expanded Synth Rack features here in 2020: Astralos raised some issues with the expanded synth rack. I posted the link in case others want to read about them. Its a relatively short thread; didn't catch much attention.
  8. It probably depends on how you define meat. For example, a few decades ago my then wife (a vegetarian) and I went to a Chinese restaurant and she wanted to make sure a particular dish didn't have any meat. It was clear from attempts at clarifying the matter that to the staff, meat meant beef, not chicken or pork. So, by that definition, "normal" Spam doesn't have meat! ? In any case, I doubt it was Halal, Kosher, Vegetarian, or Vegan (or good for people needing a reduced sodium diet for that matter)!
  9. After having issues routing MIDI to hybrid instrument tracks (audio + MIDI), I have gone back to the old school method of having multiple MIDI tracks pointed to a soft synth/instrument track that has plug-ins. For me, I have more control over routing than trying to use the combined instrument tracks without MIDI tracks point to them. So, my question is about this practice being potentially problematic: Is it more a problem because some users might get confused/lost in what they are trying to do, or are there known issues where sooner or later, Cakewalk will get confused? Thanks.
  10. I had this problem with my mouse wheel, so I took some time to get a feel for where hot spots were for the sliders and knobs. In the Console View, I tend to make sure I am on the leds to avoid accidentally changing things.
  11. I am not an expert on Windows, but everything I have ever seen says that newer Visual C++ Redistributables don't eliminate the need for older ones. For example:
  12. FYI: It is now called "Workspaces" but the link scook posted in 2019 still works. It points to the on-line documentation for "Workspaces."
  13. I remembered this was asked before. For example (click on "msmcleod replied to a topic" to get to the specific post in that lengthy thread where he mentions using the Inspector to set Foreground and Background) :
  14. I only know about stuff that I explore. Generally I defer to others who know more than I do. As for the lists with the colors, I only had those on my PC while I was exploring some of the Early Access Releases as I mentioned. Some background, Cakewalk has a lot customization possibilities. Some are relatively easy to do as a Cakewalk user and can be done within Cakewalk itself. Some require a deeper understanding. Cakewalk has a theme editor which is handy for those really users into developing full themes and for customizing themes. I have old-age related vision issues. That's why I decided to learn how to use the theme editor--to try to make things easier on my eyesight. As for the colors in the list (VST, VST3, DX), it helped my eyesight to have the bright colors and was hoping the general releases would keep the ability to customize them, but I assume the developers (who I admire and respect) had reasons not to keep it that way. Sorry to confuse you (and maybe others), I was trying to pinpoint for you the approximate time frame for when I really noticed the font difference that you were asking about.
  15. It was around March or April of 2021 that they were presenting it in Early Access releases. At one point, I was exploring what kind of theme-able customizations were in the EA versions. However, the official release didn't have the colorizable options I explored. After that, if I recall correctly, there were some more tweaks to make it easier to see the flyout boxes. Just so you know, fonts are not customizable. PS: To my eye the font in the EA release (see link above) seems the same as today.
  16. I noticed the slight different fonts before but it never bothered me. PS: I think I noticed it when the fly-out menus for FX plug-ins were introduced and refined. I think someone called them flatbed menus at one point.
  17. Joe Walsh, Ringo Starr, Benmont Tench, Waddy Wachtel, Lee Sklar and Russ Kunkel
  18. Not based on anything I read, just based on some Roland gear I have, but I thought TTS-1 used the PCM samples Roland used extensively in hardware ROMplers. I never did a systematic comparison of things like the MT-32 sounds with the M-GS64 sounds, but I seem to recall from using them a while back that the PCM sounds were far less dull.
  19. I never used my bundled XLN AD2 perk that came with SONAR way back when, but the drummer in that section has inspired me to finally get off the fence and get the MALLETS pack! ?
  20. Traffic's version of Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys was from 1971. So was Graham Nash's Military Madness. So much sadness . . . BONUS TRACK!!!!!!! Traffic live version from 1972 (13'46" concert video).
  21. (1) Do all of the controls respond to MIDI CCs? (2) Do all of the control have MIDI learn?
  22. I tend to get issues like some of these due to Microsoft's so-called energy management. Even if I fine tune all my system settings ("Windows, don't ***** with the settings I intentionally chose!!!"), there will be an update that undoes my preferences because . . . . [well, just because "they" can].
