  1. Great story Kenny. Nice memory! Thanks for sharing!
  2. Nice, but not that handy for just making some quick beats with. I think that is what folks have been asking about for years now. Cakewalk is still pretty sterile in that regard. Disclaimer: I also own Ableton Live and Studio One. PreSonus finally gave in with their v4 upgrade, and added some workflow tools for the electronic producer crowd. The upgrade received the expected flames from the more traditional DAW users. But I think that today's young aspiring customers are expecting to be able to use a DAW to easily make modern music with. I can find other uses for these sampling tools if they give them to me, so I'm all for it.
  3. Or you can rent-to-own at Splice for $16.99/mo (24 months). Pause or cancel at any time. 14 day free trial. https://splice.com/daws/38650984-studio-one-professional-by-presonus That's about equal to one less case of beer a month, or one less Starbuck's a week.
  4. Yes. Much more! Each preset in the full version is typically made with a different set of samples. So you get more sounds. Each separate instrument library in Syntronik has anywhere from 1GB to 8GB of samples for the included 2000 presets, so totals at 50+ GB.
  5. Note: Just be aware that installing this with Komplete Kontrol will add a couple of new NI startup tasks to your Windows auto run list, and also adds a couple of new NI services to Windows with "automatic" start status. I think they are put there to support NI hardware. So I disabled all of them.

Or you could just declare ST2 "abandonware" and be done with it, LOL!!!

That ST3 free edition can also be used to import ST2 libraries. That can be a good thing if you have any of those, because ST4 cannot use ST2 libraries, unless you import them into ST3 first.
  8. For opening GM MIDI files and automatically loading the GM sounds, I am only aware of two others, besides Cakewalk with TTS-1. I agree that Cake and TTS-1 are probably the best option for this GM workflow! I also own Studio One Pro 4, and that will do it, but not quite as gracefully IMHO. It opens each GM sound in a separate instance of the Presence XT sampler, which is a mono-timbral instrument. I think in many cases that TTS-1 actually sounds better initially, maybe perhaps because Cakewalk is more MIDI aware. But one cool thing you can do without a script in SO4 is to explode the pitches in a MIDI drum track to separate MIDI tracks. But you can also use CAL to do the same in Cakewalk, so SO4 only saves a few mouse clicks. I tried a demo of Cubase Elements 9 a couple of years ago, and I seem to recall that it will open up a GM file with the bundled Halion Sonic SE instrument. But I passed on that purchase at the end of the trial period, and no longer have that one available.

I believe it is more than that. It seems that they decided not to re-create the instruments from ST3 that were still good enough for ST4, like the strings and orchestral stuff. So it's a new engine and a UI facelift, with some new sounds, but with the same old sounds as well!
  10. I believe that the sampler workflow being referred to here is not related to building actual real instruments, although you could do that. For example with an integrated sampler, such as PreSonus Sample One XT instrument in Studio One v4. I saw a cool video where you could use a method of gate recording that would start recording a new wave slice sequentially every time it detected a new note being played. In other words, you could play a scale and each time a note is played a new recording is started. This provides for a wave sample for each note you played, which automatically maps those notes across the keyboard. This example shows a bass guitar being sampled into Sample One XT. Studio One 4 Sampling A New Instrument In Sample One XT But I believe the original request here is actually regarding another technique of sampling sounds within a DAW and then slicing them up, to prepare them for use in a drum sampler or groove box type of setup. That allows one to trigger those sample slices with a percussion style step sequencer, or use them to improvise or play them in real time with a button style controller like a Novation Launchpad. Often used for making beats and grooves. It is also helpful to have a sampler UI with a matrix style (MPC) pad layout for this, such as Impact XT. Yes that v4.0.1 update fixed a problem I was having with the ST4 library remaining locked, even after authorizing it.
  12. In Cakewalk, bouncing really only applies to audio tracks. http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Mixing.47.html To mix down a MIDI track, or render it to audio, it needs to be played through a virtual instrument and any assigned FX. So depending on the instrument you have assigned to that MIDI track/channel, that is what you will get when you mix it down. There are several ways to accomplish this: 1. Freeze the track. Cakewalk bounces the synth’s audio data to the synth track. Cakewalk disables the synth’s output, and disables the FX Rack on the synth track. This is handy if you just want to lighten the CPU load a bit, or to quickly render a single track. You can unfreeze with a single click. More info here: https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Mixing.23.html 2. Soft synth audio recording. This was a new feature added a few years ago. In addition to recording a performance as MIDI data, you can also record a soft synth’s audio output to any audio track in real-time. This allows you to treat a soft synth like an external hardware synthesizer. More info here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=SoftSynths.27.html 3. Export mix or tracks to audio tracks. More info here (skip to option #3): https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013079/Converting-or-Recording-MIDI-to-Audio
  13. To insert a synth in the synth rack, you have several choices: (1) insert it with a simple instrument track, or (2) insert it split into separate MIDI & audio tracks (you can have multiple audio outs if the synth supports that), or (3) no tracks. If you split the tracks you can see more details for each track type in the track header with them split. More info here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Browser.11.html You can just place a synth in the Cakewalk synth rack without adding the tracks needed for the synth to operate. A synth instance requires a MIDI track for data input, and then must output sound to an audio track. So you will at least need to add another audio track. You can either route the original MIDI track to the new instrument, or move/copy the MIDI data to the new instrument or MIDI track. NOTE: There are many strategies you can use to organize your tracks and maintain control over clutter. You can use track folders, color code tracks, hide tracks, etc. More info here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Arranging.51.html
  14. 1. Double clicking on any MIDI clip will open it up in the Piano Roll View editor in the lower pane. More info here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=0x200C6 2. Top menu > "Views > Inspector". SampleTank 4 is Out

That puzzled me at first. But then I noticed SampleTank 3 content downloads in my IK products link for the SampleTank 4 Standard downloads. In the provided products list for ST4, I see way down at the end: So it appears that they are also including the existing ST3 instruments, and the list is mainly showing the "new" content. So you are not really losing anything, but are only gaining what is actually listed as new. If this is the case, then the ST3 and ST4 content is intended to be used together to provide the complete sound library. My guess is that you don't actually need to install the ST3 content again if you already have that, but it is available for new ST4 users. This is just a guess, since I am an ST3 "upgrade" customer. We will probably need to hear from a newbie to confirm this.
  16. Not so sure about "most". I think 30 days with unlimited features is typical for a full trial version. Unless you are referring to the "lite" or "intro" bundled versions, with cut-down feature sets. Reaper is rather unique in that the trial never expires. Of course Cakewalk now has an unlimited trial! Enjoy!
  17. This here is an excellent beginners guide to MIDI.
  18. I found a free sampled guitar instrument named "Shinyguitar" among the available Plogue sforzando SFZ player banks. It's a sampled shiny black archtop electric, with pickup and mic samples, with a control you can blend between them with on the sforzando UI. Samples have four velocity layers and 4 round robins. In all, there are 11 controls that you can adjust such as tone, vibrato, mutes, etc. It's clean and dry, but you can amp it up with the included Overloud TH-3 amp sim in Cakewalk! https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=Plug-ins.2.html#1813385 Get sforzando for free here, standalone or VST, 32/64-bit: https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html Find sforzando banks here: https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando-banks.html Shinyguitar download page: https://www.karoryfer.com/karoryfer-samples/wydawnictwa/shinyguitar I tried it out in this project and it sounds good with TH-3 cranked up. Note: to install the guitar sample library in sforzando, after you unzip it to your sforzando user files path, just drag and drop the included "Shinyguitar.bank.xml" file onto the sforzando UI to register it for use. This will automatically add "Shinyguitar" to the instrument menu in sforzando.
  19. I hear ya! But I tried to check out with ST4 using more than 30% JamPoints and it wouldn't let me check out after applying them all. Had to dial it back to complete the purchase.
  20. Yep, for track #4 if you just click on that little downwards facing triangle in the output port settings box that is currently showing "1McrsftG...", you should see another entry available for the "DSK Electrik Guitar" instrument. If you choose that, then all MIDI output from track #4 will be routed to that guitar.
  21. I'm fairly certain that the OP is really scratching his head now...
