  1. No, you can load 16 instruments in sfz player, I've done it. It's exactly the same as Aria, just looks different.
  2. I just discovered that if you have the Aria Player, you can load Dim Pro instruments in all the 16 slots, just like any other vst such as Garritan, East West etc. I'm sure there are many who already know this, but for those who don't, check it out. You can use one Aria instance, with 16 different DP instruments. Instead of 16 separate DP instances. Look on the left hand side of the Aria player, where you see GPO4 and 5 listed (assuming you have Garritan Personal Orchestra, which uses the Aria player). Dim Pro is listed along with GPO libraries, and the instruments are organized into groups, which makes them much easier to find. This may also work on the Plogue sfz player. Both are free downloads from MakeMusic. I don't know if this something new, but I don't recall seeing it until just recently. works great, the instruments load fast. Makes using Dim Pro so much easier.
  3. If I'm remembering correctly, it caused distorted playback.
  4. Not enabled, screws things up for me. I don't feel the need for it with an i7 and 32 GB ram.
  5. The reason I use multi-timbral synths is I write for orchestra. As with much of what we do, there usually are many ways to peel the potato. Whatever works is the right way.
  6. Probably a long shot, but could it have to do with midi echo?
  7. Predictions in this day and age are risky. I have no idea what the future holds, really. Things change too fast, technology moves too fast. I think we project our hopes more than anything, when we make predictions. So who knows? I'm just grateful we still have cakewalk. But I will make another donation at some point, just to be on the safe side. I hope it's still around another 20 or so years. After that, I'll either be dead, or robots will have taken over the world.
  8. We need a change in laws regarding software. If you buy something and it's in your computer, you should own it. That's a great point there about the Middle Ages and Serfdom. I understand about piracy, I have no problem with dongles or other ways to authorize. Intellectual property theft is wrong. But this business about renting everything has to stop. Hopefully, this is just a stage in the evolution of the way we use software. That's why open source holds such great promise. People sharing their ideas, improving the tools they use to make music, or art or whatever. The software we use for these things is almost like language itself. you can't license language. At least for now, anyway. there are even disturbing trends regarding free speech in some places.
  9. The weird thing is, the problem seems to be resolving itself somehow. Now that I think of it, this has happened before. I used to deal it by using the slide or nudge feature, but after awhile I wouldn't need to do it anymore. As if the instruments settled in somehow, or Cakewalk/Sonar mysteriously adjusted. I'm now finding that instruments I had to set back 10-20 values in the timing feature, now are fine at zero or just -5 or so. I have no idea what's going on here. Maybe benevolent gremlins in my computer?
  10. The future is open-source. someday, probably after I'm dead, people will be making music on Linux for free. The only thing they'll be paying for is the sounds, although many will just use freebies there too. It is in the nature of this stuff that you can't control it. Short of a totalitarian world government, the future will be free, or mostly free.
  11. Yep, that is such a frequent problem that I wonder why it's not that way by default. You actually can change the number in event list by clicking on it (or hitting enter when it's highlighted), and put in the number you want. You also can change the type of event the same way. Change a note event to a controller event, for example. That's why I had you duplicating a note event, so you can then change the duplicated note event to a CC event. then you have a CC event before the note or series of notes you want to be affected by it.
  12. The main rival then was Prehistoric Tools, I believe. Or maybe, Neandertools.
  13. The way I do it is in Event List. Go to the very first note in the list, hit insert on your keyboard, which will create a duplicate of that note, then change the type of event from note to controller. Put in 7 for volume, and set the value to 100. Then, with your cursor on that event, hit insert again, and this time change the CC7 to CC11. Put in 100 for the value. The CC7 is for a starting value, or modwheel. some people use CC1 for this, it depends on the library. but I have found that 7 works in 90% of cases. The CC11 is for fine adjusting as needed on the fly.
  14. Sometimes you can get stuff to work as an FX instrument when it won't otherwise. I forget exactly how to do this, but I remember that you have to change a setting. If I figure it out I'll let you know. Edit: Here's my old thread in the old Sonar forum: http://forum.cakewalk.com/SOLVED-Studio-Instruments-How-Do-I-Use-m3744948.aspx

    Upgrading RAM question

Sometimes it's best to just can the old ram and buy all new, so it's all the same. Definitely no issues to worry about then. but you can certainly augment what you have with something compatible. If Crucial's wizard says it's compatible, then it is, go ahead and buy it. Edit: one caveat, however: if you have two different speeds, the faster one will only run at the speed of the slower one.
  16. Yep, I don't know if Cakewalk is the best DAW, but the forum is definitely the best.

    best Daw

Most of them are probably already gone, once they discovered how much of a learning curve an actual DAW has.
  18. Thanks scook for that very informative reply. It may take me awhile to digest it (perhaps some manual work is in order) before I decide what to do. It may be easier to just keep doing what I've been doing, to avoid unforeseen future surprises. It's remarkable how complex this software is. Like many, I just do things on the fly, figuring it out as I go. fortunately, this forum has very knowledgeable people like you on it to help fill in the gaps (which in my case are many).
  19. I recently got Appasionata Synchron Strings from Vienna Instruments. The Synchron synth is a one-instrument synth, so I have one for 1 VN, another for 2 Vn, and so on down to the basses. That is, each synth instance gives you one, and one only, instrument (with various articulations, of course). Usually, my vst's are multi-inst. synths, and I put several insts. on each. I have to use a midi track for each inst, routed to the synth, as usual. But with Synchron, I have found that I can forego the midi track, and treat the synth track as if it were a midi track. It shows up in staff view and I can put clips in it just like a midi track. They will then also appear in event list. So, it looks like I don't need separate midi tracks. They are an unnecessary step, it would appear. But before I go copying all my midi tracks to them, I just wanted to verify that this is in fact OK to do. Incidentally, this would apparently work with Dimension Pro too, as long you use it as a single-inst. synth, which I always do. I like to use the minimum number of tracks. Fewer things to go wrong.)
  20. The easiest way is to use Event List, which lists every pitch, CC event, velocity, time and duration for every note. As Mark said, use the filter.
  21. You might be able to use multiple channels for this. You can choose them on the synth. You need to use the multi version of the synth. Personally, I use EWSO, but just a handful of instruments, so I just need one Play instance and I don't worry about key-switching as I like the articulations I choose. I use other libraries for strings, so I don't have to worry about all those articulations that EWSO has. This stuff can get really complicated, and I like to keep things as simple as possible. But multiple outputs might be the solution here.
  22. Wow, thanks bvideo, I'll have to check that out!
  23. I want to delete a Dim Pro synth. But it appears it is not recognized in the synth rack. I mean, yes, it is there, but where its name should be, another synth's name is. Also, the freeze button is greyed-out, and the option to unfreeze it also is greyed-out. If I delete this "ghost" instance, I may delete the synth whose name appears in its slot. In the past, I have had trouble deleting instances of DP, but usually because it causes Cakewalk to crash. I figured out a away to do it, but can't remember what I did. I need to delete all instances of it, because they are screwed up, misnamed and so on, and I want t start over and add only the ones I need and get rid of the rest. Honestly, it's almost not worth using this thing anymore. anybody have a clue what is going on here?
