Probably CbB, since there are no previous versions of Cakewalk Sonar. Sonar has been updated a couple of times? I don't have Sonar.
In any case, using the latest CbB, I could start/stop MIDI projects, MIDI/audio projects and all-audio projects with the space bar.
None of these songs had VST effects or VST instruments. Windows 10.
What happens if you press the space bar and wait a few seconds (or more)?Nothing happens. In previous version I'd open my files I want to work on, press the spacebar and it would play. Now I need to click anywhere in the DAW and I'm good to go.

There are also a handful of VSTs that can take focus away from the DAW, so the spacebar (or any keyboard input) is not sent to them. Additionally, you can give keyboard inputs to the VST directly, which may be enabled (upper right of the VST window). Does this behavior still occur if no VST windows are open at all?
Aahhh...I did a quick audio recording, no VST's, saved it, closed Sonar, reopened it and Voila that worked. Thank you.

So, you're talking about Cakewalk by Bandlab (CbB, Cakewalk), not Cakewalk Sonar (Sonar), the forum you're in?
I am talking about the new paid for version of Sonar.

Well the question is, if Sonar doesn't have the focus - what does?
At the time I have nothing else open so nothing has the focus apparently.

To lose focus on a window happens sometimes.
Most likely a background process that steals the focus.
Keep an eye on the taskmanager and what the processes do when starting Sonar.
Also check the keyboard shortcut settings, just in case.
The spacebar works under normal conditions. It's just that upon opening a file I could just tap spacebar and it would start. Now I have to tap anywhere in the song, then I can use the spacebar as normal. Not a big deal just surprised by the change.

Wondering if it's me or... All previous versions of Cakewalk always had Cakewalk "on top" that is, as as you open it you could hit the spacebar and it would start. Now I have to click on it before it will start. Anybody else?

Do you have a dialog open in the background perhaps? Try using CTRL + TAB to see if there are any other windows waiting for input.
I used CTRL + TAB and nothing came up.

I’ve also had same issue of playback continuing, on one or two simple projects with only about 4 or 5 plug ins and couple of short audio clips… weird. Only way of stopping was as OP describes.
i thought maybe my old pc finally struggling to cope with latest updates, which I think partly true as same project is ok on another machine. Strange though as never done it before on much bigger projects. I’ll try the above check. Thanks
This has happened with small and large projects for me.

What is your sample rate, Bit Depth and Buffer size?
Is “Plug-In Load Balancing” enabled? - Try with this disabled if enabled.
Because it’s not mentioned, I am going to assume you are using native ASIO driver mode.Sample Rate is 44100, Bit Depth is 24. Yes using ASIO. I just unchecked Load Balancing. Thanks I will give that a whirl...

I'm encountering a playback problem I've not seen before. In the last few weeks while playing a song in Sonar (new version) I can't stop the playback. My mouse, keyboard have no affect on stopping it or allowing me to tap on anything at all. I have to use Control Alt Delete to stop and get out of it. And one odd thing is the window I'm viewing shows the song playing in a loop (it stays in one particular area like between the same chorus and a verse over and over) but the music continues to play until the end of the song then it stops or sometimes restarts.

Hi all,
i get this message
Access to C:/Cakewalk projects/chords.cwp was denied
when i want to save a project
other than that everything is fine
And i looked pretty much everywhere to fix it myself without success
Any ideas how to fix this?
Running on windows 10, i7, 16G, Cakewalk by Bandlab newly installed
Thanks
I know tis is a very late response but I just experienced this issue. I solved the problem on my end. I just selected Save As and then selected the original file name and voila it worked.

I've never used that. Where do I locate that?
-
As you can see in the video clip I am attempting to drag a Drums On Demand drum loop onto an empty track, But all of the existing tracks above it move over. The other tracks are not connected in any way. Why is it doing this? I've never seen this before. Thanks...

In the Piano Roll there is a setting in the Notes menu at the top called 'Show Velocity on Selected Notes only' that will hide the velocities of unselected notes if it is enabled.
Yes - that was it! Thank you so much!!

I used to be able to see the Velocity values in Piano Roll without having to select any midi notes. Now the velocity window at the bottom is completely blank unless I select midi notes in Piano Roll. Did I shut something off accidently? Thank for the help.

Never mind....I figured it out. Sorry folks.

This was a new one to me...I right clicked on the wav file and selected Insert Effect. I chose Cakewalk Delay. I see it open up. When I attempted to use it, it didn't respond. Upon closer inspection I found that it had opened 10 instances of Cakewalk Delay!! I closed all of them out and retried and get the same outcome. I've never seen this before. Anyone else seeing this? Big bug!

Sonar on top

Well some interesting news about this issue that I think has resolved the issue. I had a hunch that it might be VST related or complexity of a project. I did an experiment by look at any similarities between projects that were not working how I was expecting them to vs projects working just fine with no help from me. After compiling a list of VSTs from about five problem projects and some projects with no issues I found I had one VST as a common denominator...Kontakt B4 VST2. I removed the synth from the project, saved it, closed it, reopened it and it worked as expected. I tried that on each project with issues and it took care of the problem. So I am replacing the VST 2 (to me the VST 2 version sounds much much more authentic) with the VST 3 version.
