Recreating the Drums from ELO's Don't Bring Me Down

One of the coolest drum sounds from the 70's. I've always assumed it was achieved through massive compression. It hadn't occurred to me that it was also pitched down with VariSpeed, even though tape speed tricks were already an established technique at the time.

btw, the "previous song on the album" they talk about is the very different-sounding and way less catchy "On the Run". I've listened to that album a hundred times and never made the connection. According to Wikipedia, they made a tape loop from a chunk of the drum track for that song and built Don't Bring Me Down around it.

Talk about a coincidence! I just woke up with that song in my head. I only recently got into ELO but I am digging them.

For once, I had guessed correctly. Although I have no merit at all, as I used to mess with pitch all the time to fatten up drum sounds back in the days when I built all my drum tracks in Fruity Loops. Came intuitively.

Anyway, thanks a bunch for posting this!
