Fransk 1 Posted February 11 Hi! I would like to know what the options are for using a drums played with brushes in Cakewalk. Preferably something that is not too expensive. Searching the web I found some info but it all seems to be rather dated. Does anyone have recent experiences? Thank you in advance!
Bruno de Souza Lino 290 Posted February 12 AFAIK, there's no plugin that does the full spectrum of brush playing as you see jazz drummers and the like performing. The most you get is drums being hit using brushes which most libraries should have either bundled or as an add on.
pwalpwal 1,100 Posted February 12 these are worth a look, although the brush set is no longer available separately https://www.wavesfactory.com/kontakt-libraries/legacy-drums/
Canopus 408 Posted February 12 Have a look at Addictive Drums 2 Modern Jazz Brushes. That's what I use whenever I need brushes. XLN Audio normally have a sale twice a year offering a 45-50% discount on their regular prices.
Michael A.D. 133 Posted February 12 Straight Ahead Samples has Straight Ahead! Brushes & Mallets: https://www.straightaheadsamples.com/sa-brushes-mallets If interested, it's frequently on sale for 50% off, so wait for one of their sales.
John Vere 606 Posted February 13 I tried the demos of all of them and ended up making my own and use Session Drummer to play them. As said all of the samples were hits and I wanted drags and swish. The best brush hit is found in the lowly TTS-
sjoens 146 Posted February 13 (edited) Was TTS-1 ever offered as a standalone? Yamaha XG brush kits have both brush hits and swirls. Edited February 13 by sjoens

Fransk 1 Posted February 13 Thanks for all the replies! As I am not terribly demanding on drum sounds at the moment (well, apart from the brushes) I have been sticking to free drum plugins (some of which are quite good in my opinion, and it helps not to be overwhelmed by choice). I saw a discount of Vienna Jazz Drums (it's €57 at the moment), along with a favourable review somewhere, and I decided to try that out. It comes with a VST plugin, but no other software is required. I am far from a reliable judge of sounds, but I am happy with what it provides: for the snare drum there are hits and swishes, and the other parts of the kit (hi-hat, ride cymbal, toms, ...) are available with brushes too. The sounds come across as nicely warm and authentic to me, and I like the velocity response.
Bruno de Souza Lino 290 Posted February 14 You could of course reproduce these using synthesis...

Michael A.D. 133 Posted February 17 Here's another for only $9 thought it does require either free Sforzando or full Kontakt: https://www.karoryfer.com/karoryfer-samples/swirly-drums
