What is the name of this gray marker?

Question

Posted (edited)

I accidentally dragged and this gray marker appeared. Can someone tell me what it is called so I can Google and study its purpose?

Thank you in advance for any help,

yeto

The gray areas purpose is to advise that there is an active selection in the project and where the selection is in time.

I can't find a good page that explains this feature. Would you know of a resource?

Yes, have a look at the documentation for the Select Module.

Selection is often used for copy/paste operations. You can also set your loop points to the selected region.

I would also call it a region but I think what its really called is a selection.

Notice in your photo that not only is the timeline grey itself.. but it is also darkened the clip under it ?
This indicates to us, that particular region of the clip has been selected.  The Grey part in the timeline simply tells us what region has been selected.

You need to look at your tracks to see which ones are selected (for editing)
