  1. My band had a live gig this past Saturday night.  As I've mentioned prior, my Surface laptop is NOT online when we perform live.  In order to work around the naggig NAG screen, I launched CbB with the Surface in landscape position.  This way I can see the count down and the CLOSE button allowing me to close it when the count down finishes.  When we perform I have the Surface attached to my Mic stand in portrait position.  I needed to restart the laptop which is now in portrait position and again, upon launching CbB the Nag screen is not completely visable, you can't move the Nag screen and as such you cannot see both the count down or access the CLOSE button.   Absolutely frustrating!!  You can't interact with CbB when this happens, you can't close it or do anything with it but perform an End Task.  This is insane!!  I needed to take the Surface out of the tablet holder, turn it to landscape position, relaunch CbB, wait the 20 second count down on the Nag screen and finally click the CLOSE button in order to access the daw in order to perform our sets!

Hi @tdehan thanks, if you can please send a dump file it will help is figure out why it hangs for you. We'll obviously fix whatever is causing that.
We're also considering throttling the prompt so it won't pop on each launch. As mentioned, this was a first cut that was put in a very long time ago (even before the last release) so it hasn't been refined at all.

I understand your use case of the product and it sucks that you had to experience this problem live. We'll find a solution but please send a dump ASAP since thats the quickest way. You can PM me directly.

    >>unless we have all been hiding under a rock we are all aware that CbB will be transitioning
You might be surprised to learn how many live under rocks - we still get people contacting support trying to buy products from 2015 😜

    >>With that said, it has also been my understanding that the last final updated version 29.09.0.075 would keep running without further updates.
It may be updated but not with feature updates. We cannot guarantee that it will keep running indefinitely but certainly during the Sonar transition period. See Jesse's post here - if there is any planned change it will be communicated clearly in advance. Also as mentioned earlier all prior builds of CbB will stop working at some point since they use services that are deprecated.

i saw Jesse post prior.... not what I stated...............

@tdehan can you confirm that you are running build 29.09.0.075?
If it hangs you can capture a dump file while the app is hung and send a link to me to investigate. Here are some details about how to capture a hang dump This is always the quickest way to diagnose such issues.

Regarding the experience with this, we'll continue to improve on it but it was put in as an initial placeholder attempt for the announcement many months ago.
FWIW Its very common for free apps that have an upgrade path to display such messaging. (As you know CbB will be transitioning to a paid fully supported product)

    @Noel Borthwick  I am running 29.09.0.075.

I am very aware that it is common for free apps that have an upgrade path to display such messaging.  However, I am also aware that such messages will either stop displaying after so many times or will have the ability to turn them off.  As I stated, unless we have all been hiding under a rock we are all aware that CbB will be transitioning to a paid product.  With that said, it has also been my understanding that the last final updated version 29.09.0.075 would keep running without further updates...

There's nothing to see Jesse. It looks the same as the pic the OP posted. The timer finishes, and the close button comes up, but if I have touched the window sliders at any point either before or after that then the close button doesn't work for a period of time and pressing it or the sliders just gives me the windows "ding" sound like you get when you try to do something that it won't allow until you have closed or acknowledged some other window, except there is no other window. My PC is effectively frozen and won't do anything at all until such time as it decides to let go of whatever is blocking it. Minutes rather than seconds.

    truedat!

  5. @Jesse Jost The first time it hung the splash screen was blank white as others have indicated as well.  The second time it hung the image appeared.

Also, it was my understanding from the forums that in order to not have CbB stop working because of the future release of Sonar we all needed to update the the last latest update.  Now we are learning that was not the case???

@tdehan Thanks for sharing and apologies for the inconvenience. As others have mentioned, we'll be introducing Sonar licensing soon, and while CbB will remain available for some time, the app will present this screen at launch if you're offline as we're hoping to spread awareness of the new Sonar.

That said, the app certainly shouldn't hang. You'll notice a timer in the window, which counts down from 20 seconds. During the countdown, the window cannot be closed, but again it should not hang. DM if that's indeed the case and we'll try to find the root cause.

FWIW we plan to drop a maintenance update to CbB fairly soon, we may be to refine the experience so it's less problematic for gig use.  Thanks for your understanding!

@Jesse Jost it indeed has hung Cakewalk twice!  Also, as stated the splash screen positioning on my Surface tablet sits below the taskbar and the count down is not in view as well as the CLOSE button.  When my band is performing live, the Surface tablet is mounted in Portrait position.   Not knowing what was happening as there was no warning that this stupid splash screen was going to appear and block the usage of Cakewalk, the fix was finally to take it out of the mount, restart the Surface in Landscape position.  Then I was able to see the count down and click the CLOSE button.  I am sure you must see how nerve racking that was as we were starting our live performance!  However, as also mentioned, when my band is performing live many times we are performing outside where there is no internet connection.  So, in those cases in order to keep the pop up splash screen from happening I would need to use my cell phone as a hotspot, connect my Surface to it in order to be online.  Not a good user experience.  Also... I don't want my Surface to be online when we are performing so that there are no automatic updates etc that could happen which could affect Cakewalk in a live performance situation.  Unless we have all been under a rock, we all know that Sonar will be available soon!  That doesn't mean that we are all going to run out and immediatly adopt it.  There is absolutely no reason that we should have to constantly be hit in the face with this annoying splash screen reminding us of that!  Right?  This is an absolutely terrible user experience.  There either should be a counter that only shows this splash screen a few times and then not again or the abilty to turn off this annoying splash screen!

And lastly.... You state that CbB will be available for some time?  Are you stating that it will stop working at some point?  If so...when?  If so...is there a plan to let everyone know so that doesn't just stop working prior to a performance or recording session?????   Geez!!

PS.... This annoying splash screen does not give me a warm and fuzzy about purchasing a Sonar License.  In fact..just the opposite.

I've been away overseas for three weeks, started up my music PC for the first time today and got the pop-up, but now Cakewalk won't open any of my projects and even if I just start it up and do nothing it freezes. I've tried reinstalling it, but it's totally borked - I can't do anything. This is incredibly distressing - does anyone have any advice?

I agree....same thing is happening to me

This "splash screen" will ONLY pop up if you open CbB whilst being offline. If you go online first you'll never see it.

That's rediculous!  It's fine when I am home working on projects and am online however, when my band is performing live my Surface tablet is NOT online not to mention many of the outside venues we play there is no internet...

What a stupid suggestion or requirement...

  9. How to disable this new Sonar splash screen when launching Cakewalk?  How annoying!  Besides annoying it causes Cakewalk to take up to 2 to 3 minutes to launch.  I was wokring in Cakewalk on my computer early yesterday morning and there was no splash screen when launching the app.  However, when I went to the gig and launched Cakewalk on my Surface tablet and this Splash screen appeared, it froze.  Shut it down and launched it again and this splash screen came up with no way to shut it down.  Again, it caused Cakewalk to freeze.  I performed an End Task and launched it again and this time when the Spash Screen came up for Sonar I could see a count down.  When the count down was finished it allowed me to close the splash screen.  Not a very good user experience!  I understand that Sonar is replacing Cakewalk however, I was under the impression that we could still use Cakewalk.  As such, there must be a way to stop this annoying Sonar splash screen from popping up each time Cakewalk is launched.

@tdehan Looks like the crash is in VSCO2 Orchestra.dll that's corrupting memory. That would indicate it should open in safe mode if you choose not to load the plugins.

Thanks!  I opened it in SAFE mode and disabled the VSCO2 orchstra.dll.  That worked.  I am curious why this particular plugin would cause this as I've used it successfully in the past in other projects?

RBVirtualFolder64.dll is the offending DLL, which is a part of the "Roxio Burn" CD/DVD burning app, have you done a hard restart since uninstalling? these things usually install a driver to support their functionality, and expose a fake CD/DVD drive to windows - is that also gone?

    /goodluck

Correct, I've done a hard restart since removing it.  And, since removing Roxio the error no longer shows RBVirtualFolder64.dll.  Event Viewer now just shows the following:
