I tested Scaler, but it didn't seem irreplaceable to any free plugin, so I gave up. Instead, I used an arpeggiator and Chordz.  Easier to use and specific.

Sampler is the best way for me. As a sample format I use ogg because have a very good quality and the size is very small compared to wav. I use 3sampler a lot because it is user friendly, free, plays ogg and has no effects.

I have been using Edirol Sound Canvas for a long time. Very good for midi files. The guitar is a successful instrument. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in years.
