  1. If I/O is one of your main considerations and you aren't looking for anything to overly complex I would recommend coupling the Behringer ADA8200 8 channel microphone preamp into an interface such as the Focusrite Clarett. They both have Toslink/ADAT . If your Clarett has 4 channels and you add the ADA 8 channel using lightpipe you have the 12 channels. The I/O specs on some interfaces can be misleading since they don't always specify what kind of inputs. A manufacturer might say their interface has 18 channels which is true , however only 12 of those are XLR channels. The rest are 1/4" phono inputs. I would double check the specs on the Clarett. It might need usb 3.0 to use all inputs. Another consideration might be that I'm not sure if the Clarett has a way to be racked. The ADA8200 is rackable. If it only sits in the studio this might not be a concern.
  2. Thank you Sidney. I would need to look into that since many of my libraries were purchased and installed under K5. When I updated to K6 it seemed to find the libraries ok.
  3. I like this mag and it was a good price so I subscribed but can't seem to get the freeware free issue. I only see the current issue. I registered with the file transfer service but it doesn't recognize my password. I only dealt with pocketmags and didn't go directly to Musictech to register. Maybe this was the issue. The free issue links take me to apps for android and apple. I don't want the free issue on my portable device. Makes no sense because I'm not potentially going to use the freeware on a portable device. In any case, it isn't big deal for me either way. Would be nice to see what they had in that issue though
  4. Can anyone tell me if I were to get rid of Kontakt 5 would this in any way affect the files in Kontakt 6? Thanks.
  5. Amadeus is excellent for orchestra composition work. As you pointed out already the smaller size at 13gb makes it an excellent choice for those who have less drive space. I made a template for it . Over 140 instruments. I haven't had the time to fully use yet with multiple instances of Kontakt all loaded. It remains to be seen how much stress using a lot of those sounds all at once might put on my Intel 5820K 6 core cpu. Since at least some of the reasoning behind this library is that it makes a great sketch pad for professionals, is lightweight and a nice set of sounds for the hobby composer it should spread pretty far on an average computer. TBH I made the templates in Studio One instead of Cakewalk mainly because SO has a better notation capability using Notion. The DAW should not really matter though. Cakewalk will output notation but doesn't offer as much editing capability and doesn't use a separate program for it. There are a few small nits that pretty much apply to ANY similar library. The up close violins don't sound especially realistic in some mixes/situations. They still sound better than any soundfont player violin by miles. In a mix you probably couldn't tell. The full orchestra program portions of Amadeus make me want to play it for hours. Amazing programming IMHO. In addition, you get choirs, a soloist, a pipe organ and even an electric guitar. Here's something I made in it just diddling around-
  6. I think it has a lot to do with how easy a drug is to get. If you could get LSD on any corner sold through either a private legitimate business or a state store it would be more of a problem too.

    Pianobook

Yeah,I was expecting it to sound like one star and was surprised. A little EQ work and a nice reverb and I could see this one really shining.I agree that for electronic genre the requirements would probably be a lot less. Just a narrow mid rangy kind of thing might be fine. Thanks Matt for these links. I'll check it out.. Yes, If he could find a library he would use that makes the most sense. A free library would be icing on the cake. I found an NI list for qualifying 3rd party libraries. HERE

    Pianobook

One of the founders of Spitfire has an upload site called Pianobook that has over 200 free libraries in it. Check it out HERE You will need to register with pianobook. For kicks I downloaded the Steinway by Jon Meyer. Around 500mb zipped . He used some nice mics to make the captures. For a free piano I think it's really nice. Would sit well in a mix. Even captures some pedal noises. This was just one library of over 200....so I haven't scraped the surface yet. Apparently the Kontakt full version is required. Looks like NI have a nice crossgrade path up to K6 from the player version IF you have one of their libraries. I have a bud looking to get K6. Can anyone point me to a very reasonable library he could use to upgrade? I made a short vid of that piano so you could hear it.
  9. A great idea for a song Daryl. Might as well make something of a less than great situation and you did here!
  10. Thanks for sharing Wookie. I get a feeling of great expanse in the beginning. Great sci fi material. The arpeggios further in give this some nice movement against the backdrop of well placed sounds.

Thanks Douglas for theses helpful mixing comments. Thanks for listening! Daryl, Thanks for coming round to comment and listen. LOL. Yeah, I sort of thought those lyrics could be taken in different ways. It's a tough genre to pick for in having so many varied age groups. This music should have meaning for the listeners. Much of the new Christian stuff doesn't always nail meanings down or one lyric can mean different things to different people. Thanks for listening and for your comments.
  12. This is what I'm using too. Two twenty something inch monitors. Neel is sitting much closer than I am to mine though since I have two keyboards sitting into a custom made desk in the front of it.Mine are at head height which helps but they are a little farther away.
  13. This approach works! it has successfully gotten me no where in the last 20 years! I didn't want to go anywhere, so I'm happy.
  14. This reminded me of a take on the old theme song from the western Branded..........Mr. Poop needs vocal lessons though.

    A Small Collage

Since our church isn't meeting locally and since I am tasked with the music for it I have been looking at "remote worship" solutions. Last week I simply posted myself in the studio playing tunes. This week I made a series of three videos with words and backgrounds. I am new to video production. In hindsight that last background almost reminds me of a 70's disco dance floor. I was under a small time line to get these composed and set up. The first song uses some parts from a track that I added strings to it and piano/vocals. The second track is all made from scratch as is the third. The last track stretches my vocal ranges a bit in the chorus. The 1st two are much easier to sing. In hindsight I should have dropped the key. I could do it but just barely and it borders of falsetto. I hear little things in the mix in places I don't like. That always seems to be the case with anything I make though. We mix contemporary up with hymns so I shoot for a combination of older and more recent material. Any video/audio/composition recommendations are welcome. I thought about doing " When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" but I was afraid people would be after me looking for toilet paper
  16. Love the album cover. Nice mix you made here. Something one could dance to. I don't often mix loops so I don't feel qualified to comment on the way they are mixed. Sounded like a very good mix for the genre to my ears. Thanks for sharing!
  17. I liked this a lot. Such talent! Love the violin. The mix is nitless.
  18. I was going to ask the same thing. I believe when they "cheated" they simply made videos and played along taping themselves. ...and they really need a fiddler in there.
  19. This isn't the kind of thing I generally post here but the Corona virus sort of changed my musical directions for a bit. I am responsible for the music at a local church which can't meet due to the virus so last week I made a small set of tunes and posted them online for the church. I must do the same this week, so I got a little more ambitious and decided to make mixes of tunes and post them with videos of the words. I haven't made any video yet and this is only the first tune I mixed. I hope to post this along with video on YouTube soon. The basic tune isn't original but the composition behind it is all original. The feel of the tune has been changed slightly because of this. If you get the chance to listen to both links and comment on if one has higher fidelity I would appreciate it. Doesn't need to be the whole tune on the 2nd link. Thinking about maybe using Orfium more since they claim a higher fidelity upload over SC 128mp3. Posture

I think it pays to know where the ideas come from to better understand the music. Thanks for sharing this. Highlights for me were the nice synth bass and counter point going on in the background! Thanks for sharing!
  21. There really is nothing every wrong with any of your stuff Bat The reason I can't find anything to say except..it is not only one of the best examples of mixing but also one of the best examples of guitar playing. You should still be in a band traveling around playing. This is too good to be only heard in people's living rooms or cars .
  22. This is a well crafted rock tune. Not only well crafted but mixed well too! I enjoyed the listen.
