  1. The cynicism in this forum never fails to amaze me. Why on earth would we or any sane company in our field want to hold users' data hostage? You do realize that we are one of the only DAW's whose project files can be opened in pretty much any prior version of the app? Would we do that if we wanted to hostage projects? If someone really needed to, they could open their projects in any prior product like SONAR 8.5 and get most of the data out. We also plan to have free versions of all our apps so if users needed, they could use the free limited versions if they never owned a Cakewalk product ever. The bigger question to ask is why anyone who cared about their music in any capacity would not want to pay a reasonable fee to support the development of a product they use.

  2. I think the CbB team have been absoloutely brilliant over the past 5yrs. How anyone can begrudge them transitioning to a paid model after giving us half a decade of pro level software and support FOR FREE goodness only knows. I see the Platinum Lifetime crowd still complaining over on Facebook, as if Bandlab who owe them nothing either legally or morally haven't already done enough already for the user base. Maybe Bandlab can give them a token concession against new Sonar to finally put the matter to rest. I've checked my spreadsheet and since April 2018 I've written and produced over 450 tracks with CbB many of which have aired in various TV shows around the world and continue to do so. That wouldn't be possible if CbB wasn't a high quality stable DAW with professional level features and it's testament to the Dev Team that a slew of fantastically useful features have been added during that 5yrs that are in daily use. Off the top of my head... Arranger Tracks ( This has gotten me out of trouble more times than I care to mention ) Articulation Maps New Export Module ( This has been a game changer for creating deliverables ) Track Folders Ripple Editing ARA 2 That's without accounting for all the bug fixes and small enhancements along the way. So thanks to the CbB team for the last 5yrs, I will be first in line to purchase the new Sonar. I think the last one I bought was Sonar8.5 as an amateur producer before finally calling time on that version and transitioning to CbB as I was starting to get my tracks used professionally. I sincerely hope most will follow and the new products are a great success, I would dearly like my DAW to once again grace the pages of Sound on Sound and be talked about by hardware manufacturers as a popular DAW their products need to be tested with and made compatible.

  5. I'm totally confused by this post. The first page of this topic already says there are over 60 bugs fixed in this version. The point of the EA release is to allow a wider user base to verify we've not indavertently broken anything in fixing these bugs. Some such reports have already come in and have been fixed for the main release. There may be bugs that already existed in the 2022.11 release that have not been addressed in this release. This is unfortunate, but we have finite resources and have to draw a line somewhere and release something. It's been 10 months since the last release, and I think the community has waited long enough. This is the Early Access of Cakewalk by BandLab - it's is not going to be priced on the market. Once we're happy no further new regressions are present, we'll either release it as a release candidate prior to a final release, or go straight to final release. Once again, this is a release of Cakewalk by BandLab (i.e. the free product). Work is still ongoing on the new Sonar.

  6. Noel, my bigger question is why people don't understand that you can't go into a supermarket and say "I should get my groceries for free because some guy on an internet forum says I should work for free." Call me crazy, but making more resources available for the new Sonar can only result in it continuing to improve. In any event, whatever it ends up costing, it beats spending $245 for a reel of 2" tape on which you can record 22 minutes of music at 30 ips.

  9. I agree 100%. It's a true success story in a world where bean counters usually strip what they can from an acquisition, then throw it in the trash. Hopefully other companies will learn something from BandLab's example. You mentioned Studio One...for what it's worth, the Studio One contingent at PreSonus was pretty freaked out when it appeared Cakewalk was headed to extinction. They appreciated that Sonar was its own thing, distinct from Studio One, and respected the effort and programming that went into the software. And they also really sympathized with the user base, because they're musicians and could only imagine what it would be like to have the rug pulled out from under you (hence the serious discount for Cakewalk users who were looking for an alternative at the time). The music industry is very different from a lot of other industries, where something like MIDI - a global cooperative effort among fierce competitors - could never happen. I think there's more "competition" among the users of the DAWs than the manufacturers, who are more likely than not to be hanging out at NAMM after hours. I'd be willing to bet that most companies wish Sonar well - as long as it's not well enough to put them out of business

  10. There are some killer deals going on at Loot Audio right now and I wanted to highlight two small developers that I am a customer of, whose libraries I can recommend. As I'm not an influencer getting kickbacks or making money off of this like influencers do, I am going to give my unedited opinions about what I love and don't love about these libraries. All of these libraries require the full version of KONTAKT. MAJETONE This is a really under-appreciated developer, IMO. I love the tone he gets out of his drum libraries. They don't feature amazing scripting and they aren't flawless, but they have a certain magic to them and they're amazing deals at the present sale prices, IMO. The vibe of his libraries is really special. What I don't love? The way he maps the ride cymbal so that if you hit the key/note with medium or high velocity, it crashes. I've contacted him and recommended he maps the crash to a different key. Also some of the samples -- like the hi hat samples, have a bit of noise in them near the end. Again, I've let the developer know. But even so, these aren't dealbreakers, IMO. Not for the price and they don't make the libraries unusable. Truck Drums 2 WAS $18.73 NOW $3.75 A small drum kit that captures that Bonham "Levy" sound better than any drum sample library I know of. My only issue with this developer's drum kits is that he maps a ride cymbal on the same key as the crash, so you need to use very low velocity to get a ride cymbal sound. I have asked him about fixing that, I strongly doubt that many users like it the way it's mapped. I believe that I bought this library at full price and it was well worth it -- a bargain for all the fun it's been. https://www.lootaudio.com/category/kontakt-instruments/majetone-industries/truck-drums-2 This is the best video I know of to illustrate the sound of the Truck Drums 2: Kensal Drums WAS $18.73 NOW $3.75 A small drum kit that sounds beefy for a no-brainer price. The ride cymbal mapping and some noise in the hihat samples (particularly for the closing hi hat on G# are in need of a fix, IMO, but I can live with it). https://www.lootaudio.com/category/kontakt-instruments/majetone-industries/kensal-drums-majetone Kensal Club Date Drums WAS $43.70 USD NOW $8.74 A really good sounding small drum kit. I haven't bought this one yet, but based on the demos and other Majetone drum libraries that I own, I'm confident that it's good. https://www.lootaudio.com/category/kontakt-instruments/majetone-industries/kensal-clubdate-majetone Coy P does a review of the library: Extended Glockenspiel WAS $43.70 USD NOW $8.74 A lovely sounding glockenspiel that has had its range extended and features sound design presets. I haven't bought this yet, but based on the demos, the walkthrough video and other libraries I own from this developer, I'm confident that it's good and I'll eventually pick it up. https://www.lootaudio.com/category/kontakt-instruments/majetone-industries/extended-glockenspiel The walkthrough video: BEN OSTERHOUSE It's been a long time since Ben Osterhouse was a bit of a well kept indie developer secret find. The world seems to have discovered this very talented and creative developer's genius. But I'm sure there's still some folks who have yet to try his libraries. They're really different, really good and when they're on sale, they're a phenomenal bargain. I bought this library at full price -- it was the first library of his I purchased, and it quickly made me a fan. Sospiro Strings WAS $49.32 NOW $24.66 Slow, emotive strings. It features 4 different length swells and 3 sustained articulations recorded on bass, cello, viola and violin. The bang for the buck for a library of this kind, at this quality level, is simply amazing. https://www.lootaudio.com/category/kontakt-instruments/ben-osterhouse/sospiro-strings-ben-osterhouse-kontakt A review of Sospiro Strings and another of Ben's libraries:

  16. Nobody needs all the features. Nobody needs all the features. Your statement here is a Reductio ad Absurdum. That and you're trying to move the goalposts. We also never hear back from these people who get frustrated and jump ship. Never get to hear about the issues they run into over in those allegedly greener pastures. I'm sure my experience is not unique but the list of features I don't use is much longer than the list of ones I do. However, there are features not available in entry level products that really make life easier. For me, the value of all that extra money is in those features I do use that are not to be found outside the full product as well as in not hitting that wall where suddenly you can't accomplish what you want to do because of a missing feature. Like my other expensive hobby. Nobody needs a full featured camera; you can take perfectly good pictures with your phone. But when you can choose lenses with different focal lengths it opens a whole new world to you. When you can focus on what you want instead of what the camera decides, it opens a whole new world to you. When you can choose the aperture and/ or shutter speed you want to get the specific effect you want, it opens a whole new world to you. Just getting by is suboptimal.

  21. Price is tempting.. I've just been A->B testing between the Waves version, NI/Softube's VC-160 and this. Waves wins on features, but loses points for WUP and being Waves! Sounds different to the other two. Not in a bad way or anything. Sometimes I preferred it. The NI / Softube and UAD sound very close to my ears. So much so that I'm wondering whether Softube coded the algorithms for UAD given the similarities and their relationship with UAD. I'm not certain it really adds much to the NI one included in Komplete apart from UA having a scalable UI. Edit: Also testing the Hornet MultiComp MK2 which you can select VCA-160 as a model inside it. Analog Obsession does the free dBComp, but I don't think I've got that installed any more.

  24. I'm glad you said this because it's exactly how I feel. I realize there are many people on this planet who don't have a dime, and free stuff is cool so you can mess around and make your beats and learn what it's like to use fully featured software. But as a musician, making and recording music has always cost me money. The first dollar I earned as a kid with a paper route went towards my first guitar. And on and on. And even these days I'm retired so there's not much spare money for gear and software but moneys not hard to find if you know where to look for it. So I have very little sympathy for the non musicians who think making music should be a free ride. It is so amazingly cheap to build a home studio now thanks to the software. And you can defiantly use this software to earn money. So that is what I do. I use Cakewalk to make backing tracks and I go make money to pay for it. There's even a small possibility my original songs I record with Cakewalk will bare fruit someday with a small royalty check. Simple really. There are a lot of options open to the folks who won't be able to afford even $10 for software. I was just researching to make a video about the end of Cakewalk and found this thread, I also noticed a whole bunch of videos with titles like " Best 10 free DAW's" . You've got lots of time to finish all your Cakewalk projects before you are locked out. Or simply support the company and purchase Sonar.

  25. Bandlab bought Cakewalk because they saw a opportunity as a business. A music business. It came with a small dedicated user base that was at the time PO’d. Many had already jumped ship and purchased other DAWS. Seems Studio one was were most of those people went. So think about what they had bought and where it stood in the DAW community. Not very good at all. Generally it had a reputation as a buggy DAW that couldn’t be trusted for pro studios. I think the plan they developed was brilliant from a marketing and business standpoint. Definitely thinking out side the box. How to both overcome the bad rep and build up a larger user base. Simple. Make it free and hire the dedicated staff and set them loose to make it as bulletproof as possible. They most certainly met or exceeded those goals. And they even won back a lot of people who jumped ship. How many threads have I seen started with- “ I tried Studio one but I prefer Cakewalk’s workflow “. Ok on to phase II. We should all be proud to have been part of this process that will result in most of us getting what we wanted. A solid DAW that can now stand head to head with the rest and will be a lot more popular in the DAW community. Good work Bandlab and Cakewalk team. You deserve a pat on the back.

  26. SONAR went from SONAR 1-8 to SONAR X1-3 to SONAR Platinum, all being new versions of the application with new features. This is no different in that regard. There's a lot of additional work that is currently going into Sonar that is not currently in Cakewalk by BandLab which absolutely constitutes it as a new version of the app.

  35. I'm easily coerced into frivoless audio thingies. Gainmatching was a bit of a b*tch, but the UA and Waves sound very similar. The NA was the odd one out to me. That one sounds more compressed at exactly the same settings (besides output gain). Native Instruments: NA160.mp3 Universal Audio UA160.mp3 Waves Waves160.mp3 You be the judge. I just made a percussion rich loop with some melodic elements and the DBX on the master (followed by a Pro L te prevent any peaks, but I don't think I overshot 0db.

  41. I'm surprised that I didn't address this a couple of years ago. In my varied career (I'm like @bitflipper in that regard 😊) I've worked for software companies both tiny and huge. Hardware/software integration, bundling deals, etc. were invariably the bailiwick of the marketing department. The marketing people would get together and schmooze, do lunch, hang out at NAMM, and either work out concrete deals, or just do what they could to convince their colleagues that mutual support would be beneficial to both companies. Anyone who's worked in "shrink wrap" (as we used to call it back when software shipped in boxes on CD or DVD ROM's, but it meant "consumer" rather than corporate developed-in-house software) can probably attest to this. Despite the many benefits of BandLab's stewardship of Cakewalk, this is one area that at least up to this point, doesn't seem to have been covered. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but CbB has always relied on the simple fact that it's free to do its marketing (along with the stalwart advocacy of many YouTubers). I recall one appearance by the team at the 2019 NAMM Show, but there was a long gap between NAMM Shows, and these days, fewer and fewer companies even participate. As it transitions to payware, along with the revenues I hope comes greater attention to marketing, in this and other areas. I, and probably anyone else who's worked in development for shrink-wrap, used to roll my eyes whenever a marketing person would approach, because they were known for sometimes having unrealistic ideas about what would be possible and desirable. In retrospect, though, I realize more of what value they actually did bring to the table. They are the "boots on the ground" out there researching what (they think) people want, what new features might be important to add, etc. What they say of course should always be....reviewed, but there's great value in having a dedicated person or staff to do that stuff. Even if the developers are all musicians or whatever, they may not be working in the latest genres, etc. There have recently on this forum been more requests for better controller integration. This may be due to more younger people adopting the software and wanting to use it with pad controllers and the like. I'm an older people and I want to get more into realtime control, don't have a pad controller yet but I will someday. I need to crack my knuckles and spend some time in the woodshed with Ableton Live and Matrix View. I have one control surface, a Korg nanoKONTROL 2, and it's been an absolute pain in the rear to get it working with Cakewalk, despite the fact that one of the developers uses one in his own studio. For any who might question whether "official" support by the hardware company is that important, it would be good to know that both Cakewalk and the other company have your back if you have issues. I don't worry about this with plug-ins, because the companies I spend money with either state CbB compatibility or are reputable and established enough that if anything goes wrong, either the Cakewalk engineers or the plug-in developer will fix it pronto.

  46. You can add 1973 to that table. The difference is that in 1973 I bought my first house out of gig earnings. Today it buys a tank of gas. btw, last week my band went into a studio to record a going-away gift for our departing guitarist. The software in use there was Sonar 6. I am now mixing it in the current Sonar beta. I have worked on several projects that were started in CbB and seamlessly transferred to Sonar. No one should have any qualms about losing projects going forward.
    2 points
  47. Yeah, this. ^^ The dev team is small but would have automated tools for testing regressions, etc. as well as them being experienced and doing their own manual testing as well. Then the beta team gets it to try on their various different kinds of hardware and their own workflows, usually as part of their regular use of the software. I have no idea how big the team is, but there's no way they could pre-empt the literally thousands of combinations of hardware, software installed, driver versions, different ways of doing things, etc. that the wider userbase could come across, which is why there's the Early Access program. There will ALWAYS be bugs in complicated software like this, no matter how good the devs are, no matter how on the ball the beta team is. If this was a small or very closed ecosystem, you might have a better chance of it being lessened but even looking at Apple for example, with a very locked down ecosystem and a far smaller market share than the PC market, just looking at Logic Pro as a single random example, why is that at version 10.7.9 instead of just "new version 10?" - bug fixes and feature updates. Just like CbB has, and Sonar will have. The other thing to keep in mind is everyone's experience is unique too. I see some of the "this is unstable, what are the devs doing?!" posts and go "well I'm not seeing that" and once we dig in it turns out it's a software environment thing, or a rogue plugin, etc. and yes - in some cases, since ALL software has bugs - someone's done something in their own workflow that has uncovered a Cakewalk bug that gets put into the system to be addressed when they can. I'm personally not going to see something in, say, Matrix View because I'm not a heavy user of it, whereas someone who lives in that part of the app would have a much greater chance of coming across any bugs. I agree with Craig, I've used a lot of software and for me CbB is among some of the most stable and "bug free" software I've used - for MY combination of hardware, software and workflow. If anyone is seeing anything differently, it's absolutely your call if you want to angrily upturn a table and go to other software (and it's not a religion - you know you can use multiple DAWs or NLEs or whatever, right?), but if you enjoy working in Cakewalk and the workflow works for you, then working out the issue by showing repeatable steps to diagnose the problem to either discover the cause of this problem or have it uncover a legitimate bug that can be reported to the Bakers is something that we will all benefit from.
