Christian Jones
I'm looking to maybe score a deal on a high(er) end strings library that doesn't have much if any reverb on them already. So probably no cinematic stuff. I'm looking for some violin et al ensembles that I can run through some saturationn etc to create my own Melotron type strings, really something w/ that old noir strings vibe is what I'm after w/ individual note articulations, not just chords like a lot of the Sonikinetic stuff does. I was looking at this Spitfire library https://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/spitfire-studio-strings/ but I'm reading some feedback where some are saying that while they sound great, the recording level is too low and the power's just not there so idk. I'm researching but there's too much out there Edited December 24, 2019 by Christian Jones
Fleer
Maybe the Spitfire Bernard Hermann lib? https://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/bernard-herrmann-composer-toolkit/
Christian Jones
Eh, I'll probably just quit screwing around and get M-Tron Pro since mellotron is all I really care about anyway.

If it's the mellotron sound you're looking for, there's plenty of free ones out there: https://blog.wavosaur.com/5-free-mellotron-vst/ AFAIK all the ones above are 32 bit - If you need a 64 bit one, this is one: https://flintpope.net/2019/02/23/new-free-vst-au-re-creates-old-sixties-string-flute-sound/
Wibbles
There are some mellotron samples in Dimension Pro: Digital Sound Factory Classic Keys/Electro Mechanical. 1

Actually, I'm chasing a "violins" sound that none of what I have currently replicate. I've got Wavesfactory, Hollows Son and some others, but the particular sound I'm after.. it's the "Mellotron Violins" patch in the Kontakt Factory Library. Quality-wise that patch isn't the greatest quality, but it's got that sound I'm after; that old record noir small violin ensemble sound. I'm looking for something that sounds just like it but better quality so I've been looking at M-Tron. Btw, I found this one too for Reaktor 5 if anyone else wanted it https://www.native-instruments.com/en/reaktor-community/reaktor-user-library/entry/show/6129/
Christian Jones
Here's a cool use of that mellotron violins sound, this one's pretty grimy. Edited December 24, 2019 by Christian Jones

TheMaartian
You might want to also take a look at UVI's String Machines and String Machines 2. I have the original, but haven't picked up the new library yet. https://www.uvi.net/string-machines.html https://www.uvi.net/string-machines-2.html I don't know if there's any kind of demo capability with UVI libraries. Christian Jones
Thanks John, will do. For anyone curious here's GForce's response re an M-Tron demo: "Hi Christian, I'm afraid that there is no user demo of M-Tron Pro, so the Try It button goes to the audio demos page. I honestly don't know why that desicion was made, but the site is under redevelopment at the moment to clean this sort of thing up, so hopefully that'll become clearer. There are currently no offers running on M-Tron Pro."
Tezza
Yep, wet strings can be a pain. Been in a few fights there. Dirty, grimy strings aren't really my thing. I guess if I was doing that I'd try dumping tube compressors, distortion and/or saturation on them.
Matthew Sorrels
You might want to check the UVI's Mello library. It has some nice strings and you can control the noise. https://www.uvi.net/en/vintage-synth/mello.html Also Arturia's Mellotron V (best deal if you buy in the collection, I think you can get a 20 minute demo version to try) https://www.arturia.com/products/analog-classics/mellotron-v/overview Both of which have sales far more often than GForce.

String Machines 2 is an awesome library with countless patches. The best thing about this library is you can blend two patches to create your own patch. If you don't want to do that, you can use single patches as well. There are 62 synthesizers which have been sampled. Most of them being string special machines. From others too, only the strings/brass/choirs/orchestral patches have been sampled. And there are those UVi effects bundled in, including Sparkverb, Thorus and Ensemble. It all works with the free UVi workstation. In case you want to go with more than 2 patches, you can use Multi option on the UVI workstation. The only thing which I feel can be improved is saving single patches in UVi workstation, which is not an option which you get. So even single patches have to be saved as a Multi. But that's a small grouse. It's an excellent library.
