I wondered about the move to M4 and if you guys are using it. Also NI with this format .. I have been using Win in all it's formats to Win11pro for so many years, but lately I'm feeling it's future may be an awful lot more than I want to allow them to use .. in terms of privacy  ....

No great shakes .. but I am a little worried about the future of MS and their constant updates and whatnots ...🔍🤐

You might want to worry more about Google... which affects all computer users.

You should see the "Cloud Facility" they're building about 10 minutes from our house.

It looks much more like a military compound than a large server facility.

Sprawled across a thousand acres, many large cryogenic cooling towers... just waiting to mine everyone's data.

Seeing as this forum is mostly about Sonar, a Windows-only program, you probably won't get many replies in the affirmative here. Maybe Vi Control or some other forum?

I don't know why people think Apple is any better than MS about updates and data gathering. One of my big issues with Apple products is that they are forced into obsolescence when the underlying hardware is still capable of doing the job.

Microsoft goes to a lot of effort to make sure that legacy programs and drivers aren't broken by OS updates. Apple, not so much. They have a financial incentive for users to bin their old hardware and buy new, and unfortunately, they may take advantage of their position as the sole legal supplier of the OS and the hardware it runs on. They can decide not to allow the OS on computers of a certain age and then you're just out of luck.

Later versions of the OS can be forced on to earlier hardware that has been deprecated by Apple, but it's much more difficult than, say, tricking Windows 11 to install on a Windows 10 system that is supposedly incapable of running it.

As for data gathering, if anyone thinks that Apple is somehow "better" than Microsoft in regard to data privacy....I don't know why anyone would think that.

All that said, I think Macs are great and that their new CPU's are a genuine step forward. I wish I could afford one!

If people are so paranoid they should develop their own OS and software.  You don't own software unless you made it yourself.

It's just paranoia by the anti MS crowd.   Using Apple is not what I would consider as having more freedom.  As for Linux - most of the consumer market doesn't care.

I have a system I built back in 2010 using an Intel 4790 and an iPad that same year.  Guess which one I still use?

And that is so sad, about the iPad I mean. I think the iPad is an amazing platform and I really don't like how hard it is to just keep using the versions of apps that run great on them.

One of the apps that can no longer run on my iPad mini is Amazon's. It won't install the latest one and when I try to use the older one, it throws up a b1tch box saying that Amazon's site isn't compatible with older versions. No one will ever convince me that any iPad that's ever been made is somehow not up to the task of displaying photos and text descriptions of things.

I dislike babble about conspiracies or whatever, but is it really just a coincidence that Amazon makes zillions of dollars selling new Apple products? That they have a direct financial incentive to play along with Apple's forced obsolescence policies? Even if Apple isn't giving them a $5 a unit discount on wholesale product to play along or whatever, every time someone decides that their iPhone or iPad or MacBook is "too old," Amazon is likely to benefit, being the #1 retailer of their products.

My guess is that your 4790 system runs great with Sonar, and probably everything else, providing you have something newer than a GTX 550 in it. My Windows 11 test system is a 4770 with a GX 1030 in it, and not only does Sonar fly on it, I can game on the thing, do video editing, etc. It's my "shop" computer, and when I'm using it, I don't feel constrained by its performance at all.

I'm not a guy running big projects since I get to about 8 measures and maybe 4 tracks and find something else to do.   I think Intel was much better back than if you ignore benchmarks.  My most stable system I ever had was an Intel Q6600 with an Intel board. I use my 9900K mostly for gaming despite having major libraries like EW and VSL on it.   Maybe it's because I still much closer to my 4790.

My iPad is basically a reader.  Strange as it is the apps from Image Line still get updated.

I was thinking of getting another iPad and at one time I almost bought an M1 laptop but I don't like small technology things.  You can drop a phone, tablet, laptop but I have yet to drop a desktop.   There's a lot more freedom in a desktop when it comes to upgrading.

As for me desktops rule.  I guess I'm a dinosaur

You are no dinosaur!

I can't stand laptops.  I've got three of them... but I *much* prefer my desktops (both running 9950x CPUs).

For what I want to do (push limits of low latency audio performance), laptops just don't have the grunt.

Also not a fan of glide-points and tiny displays.

Regarding Apple (to the OP's question/point):

Uhhh... you ever tried to deal with file management on an iPad?  The absolute worst.

Yes, you're less likely to get malware on an Apple machine... because there's 5x less of them throughout the World.  🙃

As far as data-mining, Apple is as guilty as Google, etc.

We were out to dinner with some of our older friends... and we were talking about Roku TV.

Mind you, I never search for anything related to TV (hardly watch it).

Went to Amazon to look for some music related cables/etc... and guess what I was getting Ads/Suggestions for?  Roku TV devices.

The damn phone (iPhone 16 Pro) is literally spying on me... and violating my privacy.

For the record, I own four Macs... including the fastest Mac Studio and Macbook Pro currently available.

Better than my PCs?   Hardly.   Neither in performance, latency, or security.

I have them to support clients... and to run Lightkey (DMX Lighting software that's only available for Mac).
