Wookiee Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Any one tried this update? Has the introduction of MIDI 2.0 had any impact on your MIDI hardware?
Glenn Stanton Posted October 18 Posted October 18 (edited) ok, updated. it went pretty fast (download and install - 10 minutes?) so it doesn't feel like a large update. so far, testing (~15 min) MIDI with all my devices, everything seems normal. one of my main concerns was Kontakt 8 and KompleteKontrol to my S49 - works fine. all other MIDI functions (for me) are good. Wookiee Posted October 19 Author Posted October 19 Thanks @Glenn Stanton I only asked because there has been some reports from MIDI users of issues with MIDI hardware.

Probably coincidental, but after the last update a week ago on this W 10 machine, MIDI has refused to record in Cakewalk Sonar, X3, and SHS 6. It will play back correctly through my Yamaha keyboard, but recording is hit or miss. Sometimes the app will record a few notes but get stuck. The keystrokes were only a quarter note or so, but graphically, the notes are never ending in the TV, PRV and Staff views and in playback. Other times it will begin recording several measures in. Rebooting the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 didn't help. Waiting for some new MIDI cables to test. It just seemed weird that this happened immediately after the update and my enrollment in the W 10 support extension.
Wookiee Posted October 24 Author Posted October 24 @57Gregy has MIDI 2.0 been added to Win 10? I thought the extension to Win 10 was purely security updates.

Geez, Wookiee, I don't know. How do I find that out? I looked up my update history and checked out the latest info contained in each one and didn't see anything about MIDI 2.0. But I'm not fluent in technese. Read a little about it in Pete Brown's article Windows MIDI Services October 2024 Update - Windows MIDI and Music dev which was the latest paper I saw. It only mentioned 'possible backwards compatibility with W 10 API 1.0'. Or words to that effect. Will do some more troubleshooting tonight once the new cables arrive.
Wookiee Posted October 24 Author Posted October 24 @57Gregy a quick search shows that MIDI 2.0 has not been added to the standard Windows 10 update. But it is available to those on the Windows insider scheme to download if they want to try it. 1

Something I discovered a long time ago is that, "impossibly", wires just "go bad" all the time, even just sitting there, never moving, no vibration, etc. When I'm troubleshooting something, in any technology, one of the first things I do if I have spare cables, wires, etc., is to swap them out. If it's intermittent, and the wiring is not just a pluggable cable, I'll move it around especially near where it exits or enters a device...and usually I'll find the problem there. There are reasons these failures happen, but...still.... 1
msmcleod Posted October 26 Posted October 26 I was pretty shocked to see that despite doing regular updates, my dev boot was on Win11 24H2, yet my DAW boot was still stuck on Win11 23H2 - and they're on the same machine! But anyhow, I upgraded my machines to 25H2 yesterday. I've not done extensive testing, but my Mackie MCU & C4 are working fine, so no MIDI issues so far with the latest Windows 11. The Mackie's are connected via a MidiTech MidiFace 8, which uses the standard Windows class compliant driver. Also no issues with audio performance/latency, and none of my plugins needed re-authorising after the upgrade. MIDI devices that use a 3rd party driver may require the driver to be re-installed - I can't confirm this, but it's worth doing if you're seeing MIDI issues. FWIW, I'm using MME for MIDI (which will almost certainly not have any MIDI 2.0 support if it exists) - YMMV if you're using MIDI via UWP. 1 1
Wookiee Posted October 26 Author Posted October 26 Useful @msmcleod, I only really have one MIDI device, my old Arturia Keylab 88 Mk 1, which is also MME, as I am TITB.
msmcleod Posted October 27 Posted October 27 OK, had my first glitch with Windows 25H2... my Korg microKEY 2 wasn't showing up in Sonar, despite being plugged in. The way I fixed it: 1. Go to Windows Device Manager ( WinKey + X, then press M ) 2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers" 3. Right click on microKEY2, and select "Uninstall device" 4. Unplug the microKEY 2 5. Plug it back in again 1 1
Wookiee Posted October 27 Author Posted October 27 I tried to install it yesterday it faild, yet to investigate why!

Make sure your existing installation is up to date with Windows updates 2. When upgrading, on the first screen choose NOT to do updates right away 3. Do the upgrade 4. Once the upgrade has finished, run Windows update. 1
