What are the options for 30+ year users?

He is a heck of a guy like that, I must say.

Still using the iLok 2 that he gave me years ago.

Sorry to hear that you couldn't get the Saffire to work on your newer computer. My Pro 40 is still going strong, knock wood. I don't expect it to do so forever. When the time comes that it and Windows refuse to speak to each other, I'll probably get whatever Focusrite USB model will allow my to continue to use the Pro 40 as an 8 input mic pre via ADAT. I think the current one with ADAT in is the 81i something.

I want it to stick around long enough for Microsoft's promised streaming-optimized USB stack to come out. At that point I'll feel better about using a serial port that was originally designed for mice, keyboards, and printers to stream asynchronous audio.

The fact that Pete Brown thought that MS should redo the stack with audio streaming in mind tells me that I wasn't just being curmudgeonly about my USB skepticism.

I liked having the buttons on the front and the (almost) set and forget routing and the 8 outputs. Still have it, sitting in its box in the closet.
The 4i4 I currently use is its little brother in those respects.

My Saffire Pro 40 is working great on Windows 11 and a Texas Instruments firewire card here. I hope it never dies, the latency is lower than pretty much every USB interface out there.

What kind of buffer settings/latency are you able to get with yours? Always nice to know for comparison.

I don't have resource heavy projects, so most of the time I run at 96khz and 64 samples. If I recall, the latency is 2.9 ms I'm on vacation at the moment, so I can't verify. I switched to S1 about 2 years ago for new projects. I'll check that and Sonar Free when I get back.

Update: both S1 and Sonar Free report a total input/output latency of 253 samples at 96khz and 64 sample buffer size for the Saffire Pro 40, which equates to a round trip latency of about 2.6 ms. That is probably what the interface is reporting to the DAW. S1 also reports a separate audio round trip latency of 3.3 ms, which may be what it actually measures.
