Migration to New Win11 PC

John Egan

Question

Hi all

Transitioning from Win10 PC  to new Win11 PC will I be able to retain my old Sonar Platinum program, project files, plugins etc.  either by directly transferring (by cloning or imaging) or reinstalling Sonar Platinum from my original installation files and license numbers, the issue being (re) authorizing older program & plugins from companies that no longer exist,  same goes for Cakewalk by Bandlab program & project files.

Also,

I intend to upgrade to new Cakewalk Sonar software subscription when on new Win11 PC, will it also load old Sonar Platinum and Cakewalk by Bandlab  *.cwp project files, plugins etc.?

If this is a new PC then you will be starting from scratch. There are ways to say copy certain program folders from the old computer but you need to be advanced in your knowledge of how this all works.

Always install Cakewalk programs from the oldest to the newest. Example I install 8.5 then X3 and then I install Platinum using the new version 1.1.8.1 of the Command Centre.

this video will explain how to install Platinum and your legacy stuff.

Then you will need to install the product centre’s for any plugins that use that type of system example Melda, XLN and Isotope.

A lot of the plugins are done with drag and drop to the VST and VST3 common folders.

It’s a great time to visit the websites. Log in and check for updates. Including your Audio Interface.

I find that my Google account is a huge lifesaver because with the new computer I can log in to Google and all my passwords are saved already.

Some software and plugins have a limited amount of computers that can be registered so make sure you sort that out too.

It’s a bit of work but for me it is well worth the effort. I just did this last March. I gives you peace of mind that there is nothing lurking in your computer that you don’t want or need. A fresh start. That’s why I’m not a huge fan of transferring old program files.

And what I do is just install what I need as I go along. You’d be surprised how many programs you might have had on the old computer that you don’t need. I haven’t bothered with Band in a Box or Cubase yet because I doubt I will ever use them.
