This may be blasphemy, but IMO, it wouldn't be the first Orson Wells movie to fit that description.

Half of them seem to have some big backstory about the productions having been troubled, or the studio recutting, or not getting a proper release, whatever.

While I've never considered my time watching one of his pictures to have been wasted, I've always enjoyed them, the turmoil sometimes overshadows the movie itself.
