...the automation isn't happening.

Maybe I'm doing something very obvious and stupid here, but I haven't found the obvious answer on the web or in the 1000+-page manual yet.

Basically, I have a real synthesizer hooked up to MIDI, and some Modwheel automation programmed in. If I click "play" on Sonar, it works great! I can hear it! But as soon as I try to record the MIDI to an audio track, the automation stops.

What am I missing?

Oh.

I figured it out.

I converted the envelope to MIDI events, with the snap-to-grid set to 1/128th notes (the highest possible resolution).

That did it.
