Adding FX VST3 Plugin to another synth plugin.

I'm using Decent Sampler, and added SurgeXT VST3 to it using [Insert Soft Synth] under the FX tab next to the midi. The sound was working usually, but when I have SurgeXT FX open, all audio goes quiet. I know there's some settings I need to enable or disable, but which?

Does surge xt work as an audio effect only?   

 

Some synths can't be used as just fx, only as synths, becuase they don't process audio from an input, only generate it.

Surge is a synthesizer, do those work as FX plugins?

No. 
There’s basically two things. vst effect and vst instruments. 
You can add a vst effect to the effects bin but not another instrument. 
Samplers generally use samples to generate sound. 
Read the manual for the sampler to learn how it works.

I haven't done this in a while, but I definitely had it working.  On my PC I have Surge XT.vst3 and Surge XT Effects.vst3.  Give me a sec and I'll try it to make sure it still works.

With Surge XT there are two specific VST3 files.  One is the synth and the other is the Effects.

You need to use “Surge XT Effects” for the effects.

UPDATE: For some reason, I cannot get Decent Sampler to work on my PC.  However, with other synths Surge XT Effects.vst3 still works on my PC.
