Cynicism with age....

Sadly, the older I get, the more I won't go and see "legacy" 80's bands live. 90 times out of a 100, it is primarily because the singer has lost too many steps, and they tune a step down(sometimes to the absolute detriment of the songs). I believe too many bands of that era (and shoot, throw in some 90's bands as well) are just NOT that good live, and disappoint me. I can't spend high cash for mediocrity (though cheap cash is ok).

Am I the only one that feels this way? Am I a jerk(rhetorical)?

i'm similar, not really interested in old bands ploughing the hits mine, but having said that a friend had a spare ticket (another story) for happy mondays last weekend and they were surprisingly good and enjoyable, so you never know

I get what you are saying. When the lead singer has to shout or talk the lyrics because the can't hit the notes anymore or when they can no longer do either they point the mic at the audience for a "sing along", it's time to stop. This isn't true for EVERYONE. Some singers can decline and still be entertaining. Robert Plant just doesn't sing a lot of the older stuff. Assuming he remembers the lyrics.

I understand that some artists sing in the studio notes and phrase that are hard on their voice to do night after night and need to pitch down some but at some point their voice is shot. I don't want my last image of being their inability to sing well. Even one of my favorites - Paul McCartney needs to wrap it up. And I hate saying that. David Lee Roth has to shout the lyrics now because he can't hit the notes. I don't want that memory.

Then we have the band where the only original member is the third bass player brought in after they had been around for 20 years but was the only one smart enough to copyright the band name.

and i was under the impression that it's easier to hit a note at higher volume haha

Ozzy was tuning down to like C#, and all the songs sound nothing like they should (especially the first 2 albums in standard). Paul Stanley was embarrassing himself for the last 3 years of KI$$ (and relying on a guide vocal). Bon Jovi flat out stole money the last tour he did (and he was never the best singer in Bon Jovi anyway).

King's X still is decent, but dUg can't hit the highs anymore, and I can't blame him ...because he's 74!!!! But at least their tickets are ridiculously priced.

I get a half-step for touring (say Toad the Wet Sprocket and Vertical Horizon for a couple), but they still sound good.

Gino Vannelli still sounds good but he says he used a vocal coach for many years to save his voice. It too will go at some point. He teaches sing now to boot.

I don't go to rock concerts at all anymore. 

I go to the Symphony, if it's one I like and to jazz clubs. But after making a living playing rock for decade after decade, I want to hear something that I can't cover (symphony) or something that will surprise me (jazz improvs).

What gets under my skin the most is tribute bands getting big ticket prices. In cover bands, we did everybody and worked in bars for whatever they pay (never enough). This band decides to do nothing but _____ songs and gets big bucks????????
