Tracking takes/Vocal comping

Craig Wilkerson

Question

I have watched several videos on doing multiple takes and then comping vocals but I am having problems.
When I attempt to record multiple takes, Cakewalk functions as described at first. My different takes appear in track lanes and I can solo/toggle between them....BUT, after about the the 2nd or 3rd take, the lanes start to double up my performance ie, I can hear the previous take while recording the new one AND, the new takes 3,4,5 etc all have on of the early takes doubled on to new lane even thought the original is muted. What is going on?

Showing us a picture would help to see what is going on better. However, Make sure that you have the recording mode set to takes. You can also swipe across the take to promote it to be the take, or the portion that you swipe with the mouse, to make that the part that plays.  If you swipe or double clip a take it should be the only one playing at that time.

Please read below.

Are you stopping to listen to the first couple of takes and then starting to record again to the same track? That might cause a take from the previous recording to play when you start recording again. Just speculating here -- I haven't explicitly tested this.

This is exactly what would happen in this case.

If you stop, then want to start recording again, you'll need to manually mute the last take before recording again.
