Strange issue with bypassed pedal

Hi, I just got a Joyo Chopper Z distortion/preamp pedal and I'm having a weird problem. The pedal generates an audible distortion/dropout when bypassed. This happens only when plugged into my amp (an Orange Terror Stamp that I'm using as a recording preamp with no cab), but not when plugged directly to the interface.

The sound is like a voltage drop when notes get louder and it sounds nasty. I checked with different patch cables and comparing with other pedals but it really is the bypassed Joyo and only when plugged into my amp. Did I get a dud?

Sounds like the DC coupling section in the input of your amp is kaput.

Tube amps are especially susceptible to this kind of induced noise.

It only does this with this pedal though. With a Nux 65 or on its own it sounds fine. I also tried the Joyo preamp on the FX loop of the amp and it works fine there. It's only in front of the amp that id does this, no matter if there's a pedal between it and the amp or not. Could it be a simple lack of buffered pedal issue? Thanks for chiming in.
