You will be able to install these plugins at no cost to you now, but you will indeed have to pay for the update later on (WUP).

I try not to install anything from Waves because it you like it and will cost you later to keep it up to date.

While that is generally the case and given Waves subscription only fiasco, I wouldn't 100% trust them not to do a switcharoo, these aren't being offered in the same way as normal Waves freebies:

Plus, future updates for the Free Plugin Pack are also free!

I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to take a leaf out of Plugin Alliance's book with their freebies, or even now Slate. I'd see them both as very direct competitors to Waves and both have free plugin suites to get people into the ecosystems.

Kilohearts, Native Instruments, iZotope, ToneBoosters, MeldaProduction, Audio Damage, Cherry Audio and IK Multimedia are just some of the companies whose product lines have included multiple free loss leaders for years.

Not having a collection of free products is the exception for plug-in manufacturers. I'm having a hard time trying to think of a company that doesn't. Which is the point, I reckon.

FabFilter, Sonible, UAD....

Completely agreed on all those and I use and love all of them, but I don't necessarily see them as much as a direct competition to the ones I mentioned. Apart from IK. In a lot of ways, they have a large portfolio and also do lots of emulations of effects.

Native does do some great effects, (or more accurately Softube did for them!), but you often see recording, mixing and mastering engineers going more heavily into and talking about UA, Plugin Alliance, Slate and Acustica.

The rest do really well in their own market segment though and many of those have found their perfect niche, albeit with much smaller catalogues.

And yes, they all should really.. it often really does get people hooked!
