Orvil Ivie
I have a question in regards to adding VST2 plugins to a GM MIDI file track. For some reason I can’t get SI-Bass Guitar or any of the SI-plugins to work on a MIDI track! STT-1 & Addictive Drums 2 are good, they work and behave fine. I disable all MIDI hardware outputs in preferences then insert the SI - soft synth as a simple instrument track at this point I can open the soft synth get sounds fine but…as soon as I add it as an output to a MIDI track it stops working (no sound). Yes I’ve used them before and had no problems. I’m stumped!
Promidi
I do this all the time with GM MIDI file tracks and have never had an issue. Works every time with any VST2 (Or VST3 for that matter). I add the instances of soft synths that I need, without the MIDI tracks. Then I route the various MIDI tracks to the respective soft synth. If I was getting no sound, I would check things like MIDI Channels and/or note ranges. With the SI-Bass Guitar , make sure the notes you’re sending are not too high. I am pretty sure the MIDI channel does not matter for that synth (receives on any). Each MIDI track of a GM MIDI file is usually set to a specific MIDI Channel, rather than none. Maybe your VST2 plugins are set to receive on a specific MIDI Channel rather than any. Depends on the VST2 plugin. Any chance we can see a screenshot of a vst2 that is not working - including the Inspector for the MIDI track - showing the MIDI channel, etc.

Yes that what I meant...outputs to the Soft Synth and I can see that it gets there because I see the keys moving on the SI-Piano but no sound! I get sound from the soft synth before I add it to the track as an output but when I insert it to a track no sound! I have several works station and if I try it on a PC that has no MIDI hardware works every time. I'm puzzled...this is only a problem when I try it on machines with MIDI hardware and yes I disabled the MIDI outs in preferences.

What exactly does "insert it to a track" mean? Normally that phrase means to insert a plugin in the FX bin of a track, but doing that with a synth probably won't produce the result you want--synths normally have to have their own synth track to operate correctly as a synth. For certain synths designed for it, being inserted into the FX bin of an audio track may allow them to work as an effect, but may not be driven by MIDI. I have midi outs *and* use VST synths just fine. If you're having trouble only on those specific machines, something else is going on. What exactly are your complete MIDI settings for the program itself, on the machines that work, vs the machines that don't? (screenshots are best) What exactly are your complete project settings for machines that work, vs machines that don't? What happens if you *don't* disable the MIDI hardware outs? What happens if you don't use Simple Instrument tracks, and just use regular separate synth and MIDI tracks? OK not insert...I get sound from the soft synth before I add it to the MIDI track as an output but, when I set the soft snyth as an output for a MIDI track and start play back no sound! I know confusing and I have no problem like this on the my PC's that no midi hardware. No worries I'll keep troubleshoot and in time I'll find the problem! ;-)

If I play some notes on the soft synth (befor assignning to the output of a MIDI track) I get level activity on the main bus but, after setting it as an output on MIDI track NO main bus action! Then it can't be a bus problem, because you aren't changing anything about the bus assignment or bus properties. If you would provide sufficient details we could probably help you figure out the issue.

If you remove the midi hardware, including all the driver software for it, from the PC's that do have midi hardware, do they then work? If not, then it isn't having hardware or not that causes the problem--it's something else. If it does work, then you'd have to find what setting in the program or tracks is different from the hardware to the no-hardware setup. The easiest way to do that is take screenshots of program settings and track settings of working vs not working, and then compare them.
Kurre
I wonder if it's so simple that you don't understand basic routing? To connect a midi keyboard to a VSTi you choose it in the input menu of the track where your VSTi is. To connect midi from a miditrack to the VSTi (and its track) you use the output menu of the miditrack, where you should select the VSTi name. Orvil Ivie
I found the problem! I delete the events from the start of the track (this is a commerical MIDI file with lots crap in Sysx and events)! Now I have no problems with VST's or any Soft synth plugins... I so much thank everyone for trying on this one! I deleted these firsy control events... Edited April 21 by Orvil Ivie

No...I know Cakewalk/Sonar and Plugin's pretty well used it from 1994! I did find the problem by trouble shooting see below. Seems like many people on this forum just assume you are a beginner. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the attempt to help.

Kurre
It doesn't seem very professional to withhold such information. But i'm glad that the problem is fixed.🤗

I'm going to try find out which Control event caused the VST to stop working! I'll delete them one at a time and test...I do know it's not 91, 93, or 94 reverb, chorus & delay. I use them all the time without any VST trouble...
Kurre
Ok. Sorry for that irony. I read it as you deleted events before the problem started.🫢
