Can I route Midi from a single track to multiple Synths?

Roy Slough

Question

Sometimes I want to send the same midi notes to 2 (or maybe more) instruments.  For example I create a bass line then want it played by both a bass guitar and a Piano to create a layered effect.
Currently I have to duplicate the track, but then each time I edit or amend anything in the midi I have to repeat this in the second track (or copy & Paste the amended midi clip onto the 2nd instrument track)

It would be good If I could have a single midi track and route the midi output to multiple synths on other tracks - very similar to a drum map but It isn't for individual midi notes it is for all the notes.
Any advice please or is it a bad idea?

Thanks

If you're using soft synths, many have the ability to pass the data on. When inserting the synth, ensure that Enable MIDI Output is checked.

Yes, routing a synth's MIDI out to another Synth's MIDI in to would work.  The issue I have with this is that you have to remember to keep input echo enabled on the destination synths MIDI track for the routing to continue to work.

It's all to easy to inadvertently disable that input echo (especially when using global input echo)- and then left wondering why the routing stopped working.

This is where MIDI sends that behave in the same way audio Sends do for audio tracks would be handy.

The has been feature requested for a while now, but so far, nothing.

When I would like single MIDI track to trigger multiple instruments, I create multiple parts inside a single instance of a multitimbral plugin (like Kontakt, UVI Falcon/workstation, IKM Sampletank, etc).  Make sure all the parts are set to receive on the same MIDI channel.

If you just want multiple (identical) tracks, check Link to Original Clip(s) along with Events when you duplicate the track:

Any edits you make to a Linked track will be duplicated in all of them. You can re-duplicate to create multiple linked tracks, too.
If you eventually want to edit them separately, just right click a clip and select Unlink...

FWIW, there is a feature request in for this, and some discussion of possible implementations, including how an MFX might be able to do it if someone were to write one.  (other than the bluecat)

There is also another thread that has methods to actually do this listed (but I haven't tested them), starting on this page

And there are other threads discussing it, some of which are in this search
