great freebie. i think i now own almost all the of the essentials collection for free.

Yup.  The 1176 isn't in the Essentials, but yeah, basically they have given all the Essentials for free.  The only one I don't have is that Essentials has the full LA2A collection and they've only given the basic LA2A for free.  This 1176 is missing the side chain feature just like the LA2A freebie was.  I'm not complaining though for free.  I have other options for 1176 or LA2A comps with that if I need it.

I wish I could use it but, like every other UA product I try to authorize, it will not connect to my Ilok or accept the password. Not worth the trouble for me.

Ah, bummer.  I've never has any issues.  You probably already checked that your iLok account is the same that UAD has listed.

If you check in the iLok Manager - looks like most of their plugins (unless there's been a recent update that changes this) will only authorize to  iLok USB (2,3), or iLok Cloud.

Note that, as shown, authorizing with iLok1 or directly on your computer is disabled.

The freebies (except PolyMAX) are machine auth or iLok 2/3 and I'm using machine auth.  I'd probably buy a few, but still a little skittish on the cloud auth.  I'm using a laptop for my production and mixing so don't like the physical iLok.

Word of caution: the installer includes the "Universal Audio Helper Service," which is set to start automatically.

I disabled it and the plug-in is still functional. And it is a pretty nice 1176 clone.

I think at the moment, I have at least 5 services set to manual start that were originally installed by some plug-in manufacturer or other and invariably set to automatic start.

Native Instruments (2X), Arturia, UA, Antares, Softube.

Two more that I allow to run, the PACE service and Waves Local Server.

None of the disabled services prevent the associated plug-ins from working, although most of the companies' installer programs will complain if they're not running.

This seems silly to me. There are plenty of services on my systems that the programs that need them start on demand.

I have done a similar thing with the Native Instruments daemon service.

Normally I set the service to Manual and stopped.

I have made an Autohotkey script that open starts the daemon service and then runs Native access.  It sets the daemon service to stopped when I exit Native access.  The script also resets to state to manual if an update to Native access resets the service back to automatic.

I've stopped installing anything UAD since you have no control over their app.  Sure you could delete it and still install their stuff.  Their connect app has no options and starts up with Windows.  BTW it is a complaint among users.   I prefer not to deal with them. There's no shortage of 1176 emulations.

It's now become something to consider when deciding whether to buy (or keep in the case of freebies) software: how much crap does the installer shovel vs. the thing I actually want to use?

I don't mind installing installation managers, but I won't allow services that aren't needed by the plug-in.

Even with Freebies, one has to decide if you really need it.

In my case, my final decision to pass on the UAD 1176 freebie hinged on the fact that I have IK Multimedia’s Black 76 (part of Tracks 5) and Arturia’s Comp FET-76 (Both emulations of the The 1176 compressor).
