I would like to use my roland fp30 digital piano as input via usb cable

Kikka Pepper

Question

Hello everyone. I am completely new to all this so please be kind.
I would just like to record songs that I play on the piano and edit them slightly.
I have previously recorded songs via bandlab using the same cable. On bandlab, the pc detects the piano without any problems. The pc also detects the piano however Cakewalk does not detect it as input. What am I doing wrong? What should I do?

Thanks

Can it be assumed that you now wish to use Cakewalk by Bandlab.

Does the MIDI port that the fp30 is connected to show up in Preferences - MIDI - Devices?  If it does, is it selected.

Also, what do you intend to use as a the sound source for your sounds?

If you wish to use the fp30, then you will have to route the signal from the fp30 via an audio cable from the fp30 to an input of your audio interface.

You can also a software synth as the sound source.  S1-Electric Piano comes to mind.

It does not appear in Preferences - MIDI - Devices.
I would like to use a speaker connected with minijack as an audio source.

So, with just a USB cable it's not possible for Cakewalk to detect it as input right? You need an audio cable like XLR right?
If so, I was reading on the Roland website (https://support.roland.com/hc/en-us/articles/19967079596699-FP-30-How-do-I-connect-the-FP-30-with-a-cable-to-an-instrument-or-sound-module-that-has-only-5-pin-MIDI-DIN-connectors) that a MIDI host box is needed?
Sorry but I am ignorant in this area and am trying to figure it out.
Anyway, I don't have an audio interface other than the one built into the pc which is supposed to be NVIDIA.

I just downloaded the user guide for the FP30 and it does look like it can use USB connectivity.

I am not sure why the FP80 is not showing up in Preferences - MIDI - Devices.  If the drivers are installed properly, then it should be present.  I am assuming you have installed the latest drivers.

What operating system are you running?

I also recommend having on your agenda the purchase of a quality audio interface that comes with native ASIO drivers.  This is because any built in, or on board, sound devices are not really designed for professional use and will likely result in some disappointment.

Go to Device Manager and confirm you see the MIDI ports appearing disappearing from the Software Devices section when you connect/disconnect the FP-30 with the power on or when you power it on/off. If windows doesn't see them, the DAW won't, either. I don't think the FP-30 needs drivers for the USB-MIDI ports to work. It just needs to be powered up. Try a different USB port if available, and try booting your PC with the FP-30 already powered up or vice versa - powering up after booting.

Roland now is instructing users on their web site to use the driver supplied by Windows. It is questionable whether this is the same driver that you will find on the Roland website.
So my self I always go to the download page on the Roland site and see if my keyboard or ? Is listed and has a link to the midi driver.

Install the driver and then connect the USB cable

Open Preferences/ Midi/ Devices and the Roland should be listed.
If it isn’t then as David says above open device manager and see if it is listed. Open
Sound video and game controller

I’ll add that there is a not so common problem with USB ports exceeding a certain limit of devices that can cause a new device to not install properly.

To check open the views/ show hidden devices.
You might have to delete unnecessary devices to clean it up.

It is important that you get the device to show here first.

It does appear that this not only has USB midi but Audio as well so it is also an audio interface. It also appears to have Bluetooth midi

The description says it has an earphone output. I would get a cable that fits between this and the microphone input on the pc. I think the audio level would work.
