Alan Gustin
Puzzlement. I have created a drum instrument with Ross Garfield samples (MyDrumKit001). All good. I load the instrument in an instance of Kontakt 7 and it plays fine clicking the keys on the Kontakt 7 UI. I then opened a Cakewalk project and created a drum map for (MyDrumKit001) for use in that project. I then insert an instrument in the project checking MIDI Source, First Synth Audio Output, and Synth Property Page. The Kontakt Synth Property Page opens and I load (MyDrumKit001). Again, the drums play within the Kontakt7 UI. The Synth Audio output track loads as "Kontakt 7 1 KT st.1" and the input is listed as "Kontakt 7 1 st. 1 : 1+2 S", and the output is listed as "Master". When I click on a key in the Kontakt 7 UI, it shows up on the meter of the Audio Output track. Seems all good. The MIDI Source track loads as "Kontakt 7 1", the input is listed as "Omni", the Output is listed as "7-Kontakt 7 1", and the channel is listed as "None". Seems ready to select the drum map out port, which shows up in the drop-down as 9-DM2-MyDrumKit001* (not sure what the asterisk means). Here's where things get weird. As soon as I select the drum map, the map shows up in the Piano Roll view, BUT... no sound is generated in Cakewalk when clicking in the drum map in Piano Roll. Meter activity is now showing on the MIDI Source track meter, but NOT the Synth Audio Output track meter. I can still hear the drums by clicking keys on the Kontakt instrument UI, but I can't see or hear any audio signal from the Synth Audio Output track even if I add drum events in the drum map in Piano Roll view and hit "Play". When I re-open the Drum Map Manager, the note out ports are still listed as "7-Kontakt 7 1". in Ports and Channels, the Port/Channel is listed as "7-7-Kontakt 7 1 / 10 | Bank: None | Patch: None. I know I'm missing something simple. I just can't figure it out. I'm hoping someone here can find my error Cheers! Al G
reginaldStjohn
Check this blog post. https://prodigalsounds.com/blog/2021/05/04/drum-maps-in-cakewalk/ Make sure your output column points to your instance of Kontakt. You can select all rows and with cntr-shift held down change all the fields at once if they are wrong.
Alan Gustin
Reginald, thanks so much for the reply. I've quick-scanned the blog post you linked, and I think my answer may reside within that document. I'll give it a thorough read and see if I can obtain success. If I do, I'll be sure and post a big happy face. Thanks again. - Al G
Alan Gustin
Okay. I'm following the instructions I've read from a few sources, including what's provided in the blog you linked. Just edited out the rest of what I typed. It seems there is a problem with Kontakt 7. I just used the SI Drumkit map just fine. Something isn't translating when mapping to an instance of Kontakt 7. I'm gonna try some Kontakt forums. Edited January 12 by Alan Gustin Needed revision
Sock Monkey
Did you know that Session Drummer which was included in Sonar years ago and has now returned will play any samples even ones you made yourself. ! I deleted Kontakt because I personally think it’s a turd! it shows up in my crash dumps all the time. All you do is find the location of where Session Drummer stores its samples and make a new folder to put your own in. When you click on a kit pieces you simply browse to your folder and add you sample to the kit. Then save that kit as a preset. I once sampled my own acoustic drum kit and it was amazing to play it with midi! Session Drummer can be configured with multiple outputs too. SI drums can’t. Alan Gustin
Here's what I just posted on the blog article you sent me to: Thanks for the tutorial, Colin. The link to this article was provided by someone in the Cakewalk forums. Following your directions, I am still not having success using a drum map in Cakewalk that I’m trying to connect to a Kontakt instrument I created in Kontakt 7. It’s a drum kit created using samples which plays just fine in the stand alone instance of Kontakt 7. I created a drum map for the drum kit and did everything according to this article. When I select the drum map in the MIDI Source track output, the drum map shows up in the PRV but the sounds don’t make it to the Synth Audio Output. If I reset the MIDI track output to the instance of Kontakt, I can generate sound (and notes) in PRV using the piano keys – which don’t contain the drum map names. I can add notes to the MIDI track and they sound when I hit play, but not if I select the drum map. I’ve rechecked the Out Port in Drum Map Manager to confirm the map is routed to Kontakt, but I cannot get the MIDI to route to the Synth Audio Output with drum map selected. This is so frustrating. Any thoughts?
Amberwolf
is it possible the base octave is wrong on the map? (if the maps have that as part of their info, as opposed to just what's in the main program settings)
Alan Gustin
Thanks, Wolf. Good thought, but that's not the issue. If I select Kontakt as the output on the MIDI track, it works. I click the piano roll note, and I hear the drum element; but once I select the drum map as the output on the MIDI track, I get nothing when I click on notes in the drum map in piano roll view (same octave region). I see MIDI activity in the MIDI track meter, but the audio signal doesn't show up in the Synth Audio Output track. It's a routing issue between the drum map and Kontakt. (Yes, Kontakt is selected as the Out Port in the drum map) I'm beginning to think there's a configuration issue in either Cakewalk or Kontakt. Cheers! Alan Gustin
Sock Monkey, thanks for the suggestion. I may go that way if I can't get this Kontakt thing straightened out. I don't like SI drums bc the kit only has two toms. I'll check out Session Drummer.
OutrageProductions
Is the instance of Kontakt set to receive on the same MIDI port/channel as the port/channel(s) assigned in the drum map?

Is it possible the map is transposing the notes up or down? (I don't know if this exists in them)
Alan Gustin
It's a routing thing. I need to take a look at how I'm saving the Kontakt instrument I created with my drum samples. All the drum map sees as a choice of out port is Kontakt 7. Not the instrument named "MyDrumKit001". Now I'm wondering if I'm missing a step saving the instrument in Kontakt 7. I'm fairly new to Kontakt, so it could be that I just don't know what I'm doing yet regarding Kontakt. I'll read through some Kontakt documentation and see if I'm missing a step or two. Cheers! You can configure Kontakt to receive on different MIDI channels for each instrument library, so you'll need to ensure your drum map is outputting to the same port for each drum, but on the correct MIDI channel for the instrument library you want.
Alan Gustin
Still not having any luck with the Kontakt/Cakewalk Drum Map thing. I'm posting a screen record of how I'm going about the process. I really hope someone will watch it and let me know what I'm doing wrong before I blow my brains out. 🤨 The video is just over 5 minutes long, so bear with it and be patient with me, as I have been struggling with this issue for weeks and I just found the time to create this video. Thanks everyone! https://www.alangustin.com/Misc/001AwAudio.mp4

Alan Gustin
I so appreciate your replies, Mac. I've swapped channels and re-created Kontakt instruments and re-created drum maps so many times, my brain is numb. Take a look at the image and tell me what you see. This is what I just put together and it still doesn't work.
