Drum sounds from SSD5 are audible but not creating a recording in Cakewalk

Edward Allen

Question

Hi there

I'm trying to record the drum sounds from VST3 drums using say Steven Slate or PowerDrum kit etc. and I can get audio OK, BUT when I hit record I cannot get that track to actually "record"

Here's a screen shot of the setup I created, and also a short video clip of what seems to happen when I hit record.

The one thing I cannot seem to alter is the "Input Echo" button, but I'm not sure if this is an issue or not?!

Any ideas on what I'm missing here please?

For context

I have an orchestral violin score audio file that I've been asked to add a drum track to, and I just wanted to try and generate a few ideas direct from the PC rather than sit at a kit to do it. so the plan was to have the audio track of the violins play and I could just "tap" along to try out ideas I have, then listen back to the entire thing in Cakewalk afterwards.

Many thanks in advance.

What are you inputting the midi data with? A keyboard controller or The virtual keyboard??  or are you tapping the kit in the GUI?  That doesn’t get recorded, that is only to pre view the sound.
If you don’t have a proper keyboard controller then use the virtual keyboard and you can play that with your mouse or QWERTY keyboard.

Hi Sock Monkey

I'm just tapping on the visual display of the kit to create the sounds, and this works.

BUT its a good point you raise: Once I have the "recording issue" sorted I will want to work out how to best |map| kit parts to say the keyboard or perhaps an external device IF needed

thoughts??

thanks in advance

You can’t record the midi of the GUI.

It can record audio but that is not preferable. Midi can easily be edited. Audio is more advanced to edit.
There are hundreds of videos about how to record and edit midi. You might want to check them out. This forum has a Tutorial section. Just Google using midi in Cakewalk.

Right. The onscreen drums are just for auditioning the samples.
You need to enter MIDI notes (data) in a track with your mouse or an external keyboard, output that data to a soft synth to hear it. Once the MIDI is recorded, you can Freeze the track or Bounce to Track(s) the synth to "record" it.

BTW - If that is all you really need, there is an option to simply record what you hear from tracks - including what you "tap" in real time. For example, to record the output of your drum sampler GUI "taps", once you have the drum sampler output working to where you can hear it, as you described, look for the track output selector, in the track inspector for instance. Click on that, and change the output to "New Aux Track".

Once you have created the aux track (it can be renamed and/or moved if needed BTW), "play" your drum sampler, and make sure you can see & hear the output coming from that new track, and also even as you play the existing project. Once you have that working, it is easy to enable recording on the aux track, and then record as you "tap" along, and then play that back afterwards. -It can be quick and creative for on-the-fly sound ideas, just using the mouse.
