What is the audio setting when not using an Audio Interface

Hi, I usually use an audio interface (Scarlett 2i2)  with Cakewalk to record audio and it works great .. I will be bringing my laptop with me  on a trip but not the interface and would like to know what would be the appropriate setting just to be able to hear and record midi instruments (I will not be recording audio) ..  In the Audio section I usually use the ASIO driver that comes with the Scarlett , so what  should be the setting if no audio interface is present ?   I tried MME, WASAPI but I get no sound ..

Thanks in advance

Are you taking a MIDI keyboard? If yes, you will hear a delay from when you play the keyboard and the note actually sounding. Some folks can't deal with any kind of latency, others can work with 10-20 ms delay without too many problems. Most noticeable when listening to soft synths.
WASAPI Shared has higher latency than WASAPI Exclusive and it can't be altered.
What is the laptop's OS?
Did you first deselect the Focusrite ASIO driver before attempting to select WASAPI?

No MIDI keyboard , just the laptop  .. I was hoping to be able to mix and master a couple of songs that I already have created and maybe add midi instruments.

I basically just went to the Preferences, and choose  WASAPI Shared for Drive Mode in the Playback section, I noticed that automatically the output drivers becomes my Realtek laptop speakers by default in the Devices section, and the Playback Timing master is also assigned to the Realtek Laptop Speakers ..

But no sounds comes out when playing a already recorded song ..

This is windows 10, the Windows Speaker setting is set to the Realtek laptop speaker and I can hear sound when in Youtube .. or Deezer etc ..

If the already recorded song is MIDI, you will need to Insert a soft synth, which, it seems from your other post, you're having trouble getting.
Then set the MIDI track's output to that synth and the synth's output to the RealTek.

The songs are a mix of audio and midi tracks and the midi tracks are already assigned to an instrument .. I can  hear the songs when using the Audio Interface .

But not when there's no audio interface ..

Thanks

Verify the Master bus output is assigned to the correct ports. It may be going to 'None' or to some other driver or to the wrong pair if the onboard sound driver offers more than one.

Beat me to it. Often when you change audio devices Sonar flips to None on the outputs.

It’s a long standing problem and I’ve seen 3 pages of back and forth where nobody mentions this. They should see if it’s an issue that can be fixed.

The Master is assigned to the speakers ..  As a test I tried Cakewalk Bandlab and it worked fine .. I quickly compared the settings to Sonar and they seems to be the same.

I will go thru the settings in more details .. Very strange

Did you check the hardware strip in the Console view? Here's my laptop running in WASAPI shared. Note the outputs of the master and the Hardware bus. And if the meters are not moving then it's in Sonar if they are it's in your Sound settings in Windows.
