Midi file creates an Audio folder??

This is super annoying. When you save a Midi file, it now puts itself in a folder and in the folder is an audio folder???

Now I have to take extra time to copy the midi file out of the folder and delete both folders!!
Why would a midi file need an audio folder??

Sounds like you're saving as MIDI to a project folder already created by previously saving as the default Type "Normal". You just need to make sure you're changing the file type in the Save As (or Save a Copy) dialog to MIDI, and navigate out of the project folder.

What I’m doing is I have 140 or so CWP files in a folder. They got there by copying them from another hard drive by using Save As with the copy audio box Unchecked.

This is the mystery. In the past if you used save as with the box unchecked you didn’t get the folders.

There is only an empty audio folder in that folder. I guess it gets created somehow when you open and save any of these projects.

I open each project and immediately I go to save as and select midi type 1. This will grey out the copy audio box. Obviously because there’s no audio being saved with a midi file. If there’s audio in a project it will warn you that it is not being saved.
I’m of course wishing to save them to a new location.
Expected behaviour from the past is the project now saved as a midi file will just be a midi file, no folders.
What I get is the midi file is inside a named project folder and in the folder is also an audio folder??’

If I use save as and do not charge the location I just get a midi file.

So the workaround which is a PITA is to do just that and then drag and separate all the midi files and move them to the new folder.

Hmmm... Not seing that here. It may be related to the fact that the audio is referenced from another location because of the way your migrated the project files. I'd have to try that specifically.

Is that box unchecked before changing the file type grays it out?

Yes . I just figured it out. If I do the save as  and The  box is checked by default. When I choose midi 1 the box is greyed out. But!!
if before I choose midi 1 I unchecked the box there is no folders! So it’s weird but at least I can save a lot  of extra work buy simply unchecking the box at that exact point in the process! 25 year later I’m still learning!!!

I just made it to Song # 120. No crashes!
I also just discovered that there are extra patches in GM I had totally forgotten about. You need to open the other banks! 38 years of using midi and I’m still an idiot!
