can't hear guitar fx plugin while recording or playback

I have the Focusrite 2i2;  trying to use a distortion effect (from TH3).

Guitar plugged into Focusrite.  I select the fx from TH3. 

However, I can only hear my clean guitar via direct monitoring; no fx.

I have tried both abling and disabling monitor playback and it makes no difference.

I have the "auto echo" button on for the audio track that I'm using and cakewalk is receiving the signal.

I record but when I playback my recording, again, no distortion, just clean guitar.

I don't get it.

Yep!  I chose METAL 80s.. tried a couple, nothing

Disable the 2i2 monitor and do you hear the guitar thru TH3 when you play? Are you using an amp or fx? Is the amp or fx turned on? Is TH3 bypassed?

I've disabled and abled the 2i2 monitor, doesn't make a difference.  I'm using: guitar plugged into 2i2 line 1. 

No amp. 

Just direct plug in to the 2i2. 

TH3 not bypassed.

How about the global FX Bypass in the Mix Module? Make sure that's not lit/enabled. 'E' is the default keybinding for it.
