New Sonar, just so I have this right...

I am a longtime Cakewalk/ Sonar/ CbB guy. I am about to get a new machine, I need to clarify something about the New Sonar.

So, buying the subscription to Bandlab (Membership), gets you access to Cakewalk Sonar? Any additional expense, or am I "all in" at $150/year?

It's not some "here, buy Bandlab membership, and that will 'give you permission' to buy Sonar additionally" deal, is it?

I'm at the perfect place to do this, I just have to know whether to shop other DAWs. $150 is pretty reasonable, but it gets less so if there are multiples of that.

I have also been a Twelvw Tone user since the time, the question is when I want to leave the membership, will I be able to continue using Sonar?
I wrote some posts because I want to own my work tools and I'm waiting for developments on the full license.

No it's not like that.  You pay for the membership and you have access to it thats all there is to it. You do still have to buy a license for TH3 / THE if you want to use the full versions. 

 

I upgraded to it yesterday and I'm really enjoying it.

@Timothy Connelly it is a subscription so if you stop paying the software stops working, fully, you lose saving and export. 

However you do also get access to Cakewalk Next (PC & Mac versions), the expanded version of Bandlab web based DAW. Along with Bandlab's libraries of Audio and MIDI loops and clips. All of which may be of no interest to you, but is included in the subscription price.

Not entirely accurate.

As it currently stands, when your subscription elapses, you lose the ability to save or export.  Apart from that, Sonar will continue to operate.

maybe just refer to it as "demo mode" as that's what you can do without a subscription? would be clearer for users

Edited to correct a small errata, but software you can not save or export from is not much use is it?

yeah, no saving sucks.  but it's easy enough to stream what you're listening to to a file using any number of methods, so export won't be the problem.

so, while the subscription is effective, it would be time to check on the status of your project backups:

- exported all tracks as WAV, raw + printed FX versions
- exported all MIDI + mappings
- FX settings all saved as presets in the FX format
- copius notes (FX settings in case your new DAW cannot support it, or the FX subscription also runs out and you need to substitute, automations, mappings, etc etc etc)

this way if you need to continue using another DAW, then you could generally pick up where you left off.

For free, you get and can keep the frame, but if you want cushions, you have to pay a rental fee. If you stop paying they will come get your cushions.  There is no option to “rent to own” and the fact that you previously bought their recliner doesn’t matter.
 

Nice frame, no cushions. 🤣
 

And yes, loopback is an option.

Yes the other thing that is not happening is the option of saving to the new DAW Project format. I see Cubase just added it. This will be a must have feature going forward.

What I've read on other forums is it depends on each Daw on how much of your project gets transferred. Example Automation is lost. But it's a step in the right direction because for a lot of people being able to work in different Daw's would be an improvement to workflows. As I stumble though trying the 4 Daw's I chose as worthy replacements, I find each has a strong point. But none have them all. Sonar really does have the most. The software is King, but it comes with no future guarantee that I can use it.
