eDrum Latency Using Cakewalk and and Drum Plugins

david40

Question

Has anyone had any experience using the Roland TD-50X as a MIDI controller for drum plugins in Cakewalk? The TD-50 can be used in that way via MIDI cables or over USB, and I just wanted to know if there is any difference in latency between using the USB or MIDI cables?

Thank You

Shouldn't be (or at least not perceivable).

That being said, given the choice, I would use USB.

USB allows for multiple ports.  This might not be relevant for the TD-50X.  However, this is especially important when using your MIDI controller as a control surface.  One port for the control surface functions, another for the MIDI functions.

I don't have TD-50, but even my simpler module works well over USB. Don't forget to use Roland drivers (even so it may work without). The latency of Roland Audio Interfaces is not the best in the world, but ok to play throw Drum VSTs in the DAW (even so you probably will notice the response is slower).

MIDI also works fine in terms of latency, when connected throw quality MIDI input (I mean connecting  throw "MIDI to USB cable" for $1 make no sense).

Any real noticeable latency you'd experience would be via your audio driver rather than the MIDI signal. Either way of inputting MIDI is equally valid, it just boils down to what the most convenient method for you to connect is. Just make sure you're using an appropriate audio card with ASIO drivers for low latency.
