Tracks start quiet but the next clip in the track is louder

I'm finding this challenging to describe, but I copied a clip in a track that is just the same as the other clips, and it is quieter5 than the clip it is copied from. It is a jarring increase in volume. Also, it is double tracked guitar recording, and when i mute either track the problem goes away.

Has clip gain automation somehow been accidentally applied?

I'm not 100% sure about this, but here we go.

Doubletracked instruments, two identical sounds on the same place in the timeline, often increase in volume. Which should mean if you take a clip from one track and put it somewhere else on the timeline it would not get that boost in volume.
