Need to use MME to record with a mic

I was trying to sample an instrument with a USB microphone and if I used anything other than MME, it was a garbled mess of static. The weird thing is, it was the right length going into Cakewalk, like the spacing of the audio peaks was right, but when I stopped recording, it just sped up the recording and was static.
