Once you've downloaded the .DLL, just drop it into your VST2 plug-ins folder and Cakewalk should scan it and add it to your plug-ins list.

If you're going to check it out, I highly recommend also installing the extra patches linked from the site that John linked to. Installing patches for Synth1 is a little clumsy, IIRC, but also well worth the effort.

Navigating the world of free plug ins is fraught with traps and boogie men. I have found Plug ins 4 free pretty safe.

I didn't realize that my VST2 file was Steinberg.  worked like a charm as they say.

I think you mean it was in the Steinberg VST folder. Many plug ins default to there so it’s a good one to make sure is on Cakewalk scan pathways.

I have been looking for a tutorial for Synth 1 and have found some.  But I haven't found one that tells me how to use at the bottom of the synth where it says 

"1:Initial Sound" and below that "00:".

Am I missing something?
