I am wanted to add an instrument very now and then to a song. sometimes a trumpet, sometimes a sax etc, can I simply plug in an electronic keyboard such as a yamaha and record from that? Thanks

If your interface comes with midi inputs, than yes. If you have a USB E-Keyboard, than yes.

Sure, but the answer depends on what you mean.

If you want to play sounds that comes with a plugin or other sound generating software installed on your computer, then you do it the way Will said, using a MIDI (DIN) or USB cable, depending on available outputs or your keyboard.

If you, on the other hand, want to record sounds that are generated inside your keyboard, then you must connect your keyboard to your computer using audio cables.
